1. Article: NSF, NIH Emphasize
the Importance of Mentoring
|
|
An initiative to help postdocs learn their profession while having the freedom
to pursue their own ideas and studies at the same time has been adopted by NIH and NSF. The two funding organizations
will require researchers to include mentoring plans in their grant applications, to ensure that postdocs won’t be
considered simply as workers.

FastLane changes to reduce the use of Social Security Numbers (SSNs)
|
|
Inorder to comply with Government directives, FastLane has introduced the following chages which began on August 4th,
2007.
FastLane Registration:
Registration modules, for new individuals, contacts, and organizations, will be modified to remove the request for SSN
data. A pseudo-SSN, soon to be renamed "NSF ID," will be generated for all new users.
The Registration modules affected include:
- New Individual
- New Organization
- New Contact
- New Postdoctoral Fellowship
FastLane Coversheet co-PI Assignment:
Currently, co-PIs may be added to a proposal coversheet by a PI entering either the co-PI's email address or SSN. As
of August 4th, only email address or NSF ID will be accepted.
Existing FastLane users will NOT be affected, except for those adding a co-PI to a proposal coversheet.

5. The Table of
Contents of the August 31, 2007 NIH GUIDE
|
|
The previous static listings for
browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings that retrieve only
active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates stated in those
announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by default, since
expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available from the main
NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page, at:
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html
All announcements (active plus inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at
the top of each listing page. Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide
Database Search page http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm
is available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
Ifyou have any difficulty obtaining the information you need from the Guide, contact Carol Reichenbach, carol.reichenbach@utoledo.edu, at HSC extension 4252, or Rick
Francis, rick.francis@utoledo.edu, at MC extension 6193.
