Research Notes January 4, 2008
| 2. UT's Research Funding Opportunity Databases: COS and IRIS |
|
The University of Toledo currently
subscribes to two funding opportunity databases: IRIS (previously available only to the Health Science Campus) and COS
(previously available only to the Main Campus). Both feature multi-parameter searching and emailed funding alerts. Where
to
go to start:
Once you establish your COS account (it only takes a few minutes to register), you may use it from any location. Research
and Sponsored Programs will happily provide department presentations.
|
| 3. Confidential Information and Public Institutions |
|
|
As an Ohio public institution, UT is
subject to the Ohio Public Records Act, which requires a public office (i.e. virtually every office at UT) to keep its records
open for public inspection and copying, with few exceptions. It is important for everyone to understand their rights and
obligations under the Public Records Act. To this end, the Ohio Attorney General's office has published an excellent document
which covers the basics of this Act. A copy of this document may be obtained via the following link: http://www.ag.state.oh.us/online_publications/2004_yellow_book.pdf.
Should you ever get a request for records under the Ohio Public Records Act, the Health
Science Campus of UT has a policy which describes how you should respond to that request. That policy may be obtained via
the

| 4. How do I use the Research and Sponsored Programs
Calendar? |
|
Research and Sponsored Programs has an event calendar that can be accessed via http://calendar.utoledo.edu/.
Anyone can add relevant events to the calendar to let the research community know of upcoming deadlines and opportunities.
(All submitted events will be viewed and approved by an administrator)
How to submit an event to the calendar:
- On the front calendar page, check the box 'Research and Sponsored Programs' located in the Academic category.
- Select the 'View Selected' button.
- You will be taken to the RSP Calendar. From there, select 'Submit Event' which is located next to a green plus sign in
the top right corner of the page.
- Fill out the information page in detail. You will need to enter your email address in order to submit and receive
confirmation emails. You will be able to attach pictures and files as well as multiple contacts.
- Click submit when you are finished filling out the event application, and you will receive a pop-up box that tells you
your submission is being processed. Click 'okay' and make sure you are redirected back to the calendar. (ATTN: If you
are not directed back to the calendar, you will remain on the application page. This means you forgot to fill in a
crucial step. Read the warning at the top of the page to figure out what field you forgot to complete, then re-submit)

| 5. The Table of Contents of the January 4, 2008 NIH
GUIDE |
|
The
previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings
that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates
stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by
default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available
from
the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page ( http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html
).
All announcements (active plus
inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page.
Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm is
available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
If you have any difficulty obtaining
the information you need from the Guide, contact Carol Wilkerson, carol.wilkerson@utoledo.edu, at
HSC extension 4252, or Rick Francis, rick.francis@utoledo.edu, at MC
extension 6193.
