| 1. Grants.gov Adobe Forms: Software Update and Warning |
|
Grants.gov has announced that Adobe Reader version 8.1.2 is compatible with Grants.gov.
The compatible versions of Adobe Reader are available to download for free on the Grants.gov website on the Download Software page. For more information on Adobe Reader please visit the updated
Adobe Reader FAQ section.
As an additional resource, a test application package has been made available to verify if you
have the compatible version of Adobe Reader installed on your computer. To verify if your Adobe Reader version is compatible
with Grants.gov please visit, http://www.grants.gov/applicants/AdobeVersioningTestOnly.jsp. However, in the
past week it became clear that it is not enough to have Adobe Reader 8.1.1 or newer to submit; one must also be
careful to ensure that the application package is NEVER opened by Adobe Professional of ANY release version, because the file
will
be corrupted in a way that makes submission impossible. And at the moment, there is no way to know there is a
problem UNTIL SUBMISSION. Timely updates found here:

| 3. NIH Issues New Public Access Policy |
|
|
The NIH recently announced its new Public Access Policy regarding peer-reviewed publications. The new NIH Public Access Policy
will ensure published NIH-funded research is accessible to the public, health care providers, educators and scientists and
will help advance science and improve human health.
Inaccordance with federal law, the NIH now requires the submission of published articles resulting from NIH-funded research
to
PubMed Central. These articles will be made publicly available on PubMed Central within 12 months of the publication date.
The length of this delay period is determined by the copyright holder, which may be the author, their institution or their
publisher. NIH will continue to work with all three groups to make this new policy a success.
There are three actions grantees must take to comply with the policy:
- Address copyright: Beginning April 7, 2008, authors of articles arising from NIH funds are responsible
for ensuring that publishing agreements allow for full compliance with the policy.
- Submit the article to NIH. Beginning April 7, 2008, authors must submit to PubMed Central an electronic
version of every peer-reviewed article arising from NIH research funds, once an article is accepted for publication. NIH
has worked with publishers to develop several ways to submit articles:
- The author or someone in their organization may deposit a copy of the peer-reviewed manuscript in the NIH
Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system (http://www.nihms.nih.gov/).
Author verifies content.
- The journal may offer to send the peer-reviewed manuscript files to the NIHMS. Author verifies content.
- Publish in a PubMed Central Journal. No additional effort required from the author. See http://publicaccess.nih.gov/submit_process_journals.htm
for a list of these journals.
Cite. Beginning April 7, 2008, authors must include PubMed Central ID numbers in NIH applications and reports
when citing their articles covered by the policy.

| 5. The Table of Contents of the February 15, 2008 NIH
GUIDE |
|
The
previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings
that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates
stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by
default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available
from
the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page ( http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html
).
All announcements (active plus
inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page.
Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm is
available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
If you have any difficulty obtaining
the information you need from the Guide, contact Carol Wilkerson, carol.wilkerson@utoledo.edu, at
HSC extension 4252, or Rick Francis, rick.francis@utoledo.edu, at MC
extension 6193.
