| 1. SCAW IACUC-Advanced Workshop on June 4, 2008 in Columbus,
OH |
|
This one-day workshop was developed by SCAW to train
individuals concerned with science and appropriate animal welfare. The program is designed for experienced IACUC
members and administrators, principal investigators, attending veterinarians, regulatory personnel and laboratory animal care
staff. The regional workshop format provides an opportunity for small groups to discuss specific, advanced topics that
are relevant to IACUC functions. Each workshop is customized to meet the needs of the local community.
The workshop will be held June 4, 2008 at the Blackwell Hotel
& Conference Center on the Ohio State University Campus.

| 3. Review Committee Service Not Appealing? NIH Hears Your
Concerns |
|
|
Once it was an honor. Now, an invitation to be a peer reviewer is
seen by many scientists as a chore.
Tight budgets mean fewer applications have a good chance of receiving
funding, which can make review committee service as appealing as washing dishes.
Plus, a sustained increase in application numbers means NIH needs ever more
peer reviewers, raising questions about the qualifications of some committee members. See NIH Mulls Ways to Lure Back Veteran Peer Reviewers.
NIH is listening to these concerns, while experimenting with ways to
strengthen peer review. Likely changes include shorter applications, more virtual online meetings, and better
alignment of critiques to review criteria.

| 5. The Table of Contents of the May 30, 2008 NIH GUIDE |
|
The
previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings
that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates
stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by
default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available
from
the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page ( http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html
).
All announcements (active plus
inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page.
Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm is
available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
If you have any difficulty obtaining
the information you need from the Guide, contact Carol Wilkerson, carol.wilkerson@utoledo.edu, at
HSC extension 4252, or Rick Francis, rick.francis@utoledo.edu, at MC
extension 6193.
