Research Notes August 1, 2008
| 1. Research Notes Reminders Regarding Inclusion of Special
Features in Grant Applications |
|
Applicants should use text only for the following two application components:
- Description: Project Summary and Relevance, in the PHS 398 paper application (see PHS 398 instructions in Part I, 4.2.1),
and
- Project Summary/Abstract and Project Narrative, in the SF424(R&R) for electronic submissions (see SF424 instructions
in Part I, 4.4, items 6 and 7).
The information provided in these components becomes part of the Summary Statement that documents the results of the review
process. When a grant application is selected for award, the information become publicly available in the Computer
Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects database (CRISP;http://report.nih.gov/crisp/index.aspx).
If figures or information not in standard text format are included in these components of application submissions, it is not
transferred for the other uses and a blank section will appear. Therefore, it is important that applications consist of
text only in these two components.
Applicants should not embed movies or other materials in the PDF attachments of the Research Plan or of other components of
electronic submissions. These will not be available to NIH staff and/or reviewers after the transit of the application
through the Grants.gov and NIH eRA processing systems.

| 2. New Data Gives Insight on NIH Peer Reviews of Clinical
Research Applications |
|
The American Journal of Medicine has published new data that sheds light on why clinical research applications do not fare
as
well as basic science applications in peer reviews at the National Institutes of Health. The NIH Center for Scientific Review
(CSR) initiated this study to follow-up its earlier studies to address the perception that clinical research grant
applications are disadvantaged in the NIH peer review process.

GUIDE |
|
The
previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings
that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates
stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by
default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available
from
the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page ( http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html
).
All announcements (active plus
inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page.
Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm is
available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
If you have any difficulty obtaining
the information you need from the Guide, contact Carol Wilkerson, carol.wilkerson@utoledo.edu, at
HSC extension 4252, or Rick Francis, rick.francis@utoledo.edu, at MC
extension 6193.
