Jake Surdell
Coach Jake Surdell started playing the sport of ice hockey at the age of four. After starting out at the Toledo Ice House and Toledo Sports Arena, Jake went to play for various AA and AAA hockey programs in both Ohio and Michigan. From 1994 to 1998, Jake attended Toledo St. Francis High School where he was a 4-year letterman and team captain. Coach Surdell was selected as all-league honorable mention his junior year and first team all-league his senior year. During Coach Surdell's junior and senior years in high school, he also participated on a pre-post travel team that won the Ohio state and Mid American district championships. Jake's hockey career then brought him to the ACHA and the University of Toledo where for two seasons he started at left wing and center. Jake then began his coaching career serving as an assistant coach at UT for two seasons. Shortly before the 05-06 season, Jake was chosen as the teams new head coach and that year, for the first time in over 10 seasons, the UT Rocket hockey team finished the season with an above 500 record of 16-15-1. Since then Coach Surdell and his staff have taken many strides to improve the program and return it to its old form. Hockey has been a long standing tradition at UT and Jake would like nothing more than to rebuild the program into an annual national contender.
Josh Surdell began playing ice hockey at the age of four at the Toledo Sports Arena and Toledo Ice House. While growing up, Josh played at various levels of AA and AAA in both Ohio and Michigan. Josh continued his playing career for Toledo St. Francis High School where he was voted to all-league honors both his junior and senior seasons and was elected as an alternate for the All State Team. After a stellar high school career, Josh continued on to play hockey for the University of Toledo his freshman and sophomore seasons before withstanding a career ending knee injury. Josh continued to stay involved in the sport of ice hockey as the JV assistant and varsity defense coach for Toledo St. Francis High School for three seasons. This is currently Josh’s fifth season as defense coach for The University of Toledo Ice Hockey team.
