The Student Union and the Student Center are the heart of community life at the University of Toledo for all students, faculty, staff and visitors. They represent a well-considered plan for campus unity - providing opportunities for individuals to interact and exchange ideas. The Union and the Center celebrate the dignity of the individual and the diversity of the community.
As part of the educational program of the University, they create a climate for development and involvement through the services offered. Through the various boards, committees and staff, they provide cultural, educational, social and recreational programs aimed to make co-curricular activity an integral and valuable part of the University mission. Through its programs, the Union and Center encourage self-directed activity which promotes personal responsibility and enhances the quality of campus life.
The Union and Center serve as a unifying force in the University community, cultivating mutual respect for each other and loyalty to the University.
The land was the center of a controversy in 1966 when the University of Toledo decided to build the community and Technical College there. The dispute was whether this use of the land was in keeping with the requirement of the Jesup W.Scott deed of trust that originally donated the land to the university in 1872. The courts ruled that it was appropriate to build the Community and Technical College there. Ground was broken on June 9,1967 and dedication ceremonies were held on April 24,1970.
The cost of the new facility was $7.3 million and was financed by the State of Ohio, the Federal Government and a municipal tax levy.
Unique to this facility is a 950-foot diameter pond in the center of the grounds, which was dug before the construction of the facility.
In 1988 The University of Toledo, Toledo Sesquicentennial Commission and The Ohio Historical Society deemed the land historical.
