SMART MANAGEMENT & DESIGN

OVERVIEW

Background: Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a building assessment software tool developed to create a unique integrated system for bringing productivity and excellence to every building design. This integrated system combines performance analysis tools for architects and engineers, planners, and facilities managers.

Emerging Technologies: At the heart of the BIM system is an Integrated Data Module (IDM). This module is shared by the various building assessment applications (i.e., electrical, mechanical, environmental, etc.). This allows for data to be shared between the various applications, improving the lines of communication between the design team, thereby, speeding up the decision-making process. Design decisions that once required the design team to study the consequence of each design change can now be assessed using the IDM, thus avoiding duplication, minimizing errors, ensuring consistency, and saving time1.

Benefits: This system can be used at any stage of the design process, from design concept to building completion and throughout the building life cycle.
