The Subtext of a Yale Education
Friday, Nov. 6, 7:30 p.m. Law Center Auditorium Admission Free, Donations Welcome
The UT Department of Theatre & Film welcomes filmmaker Kyle Henry to campus for the screening of his film, University, Inc. The film will be shown with Laura Dunn's The Subtext of a Yale Education. Both films explore the corporate takeover of academia.
Henry's film was made in response to his university's (The University of Texas at Austin) decision to replace the film department with a McDonald's restaurant. Subtext examines a labor dispute at Yale from the point of view of the filmmaker, a student at Yale.
Henry will lead a panel discussion following the films. The discussion will look at how corporate influence has impacted UT. During his stay at UT as the department's guest artist, Henry will also conduct a workshop with UT film students.
Written by journalist Sophie Treadwell, Machinal is based on a sensational 1927 murder trial in which the defendent, Ruth Synder, was accused in the murder of her husband and sentenced to die in the electric chair. Machinal depicts a similar woman and examines what might drive her to commit murder.
The play is an expressionist work and as such is no ordinary dramatic play. Meaning is expressed as an emotional experience rather than physical reality. In UT's version, directed by theatre lecturer, Irene Alby, playgoers will be immersered in a theatrical experience that goes beyond standard drama techniques to incorporate choreography and film, among other unique visual and auditory elements.
When you attend a UT Theatre & Film event, you'll get a coupon that saves you 10% off your order plus Caffeini's will send another 10% back to the department to help support theatre & film programs. Coupons also available in the Theatre & Film Department Box Office.
