    Volunteer Opportunities

The Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women (ECW) welcomes volunteers from the University and Toledo area communities.

    FALL 2009 WOMEN’S CORPS OPPORTUNITIES

     Math and Science tutors:

    • We are partnering with the Ella P. Stewart Academy School in Toledo and are in need of 30+ volunteers to help girls strengthen their math and science skills.  Your commitment would require afterschool tutoring (3:15pm-4:15pm) twice a week for ten weeks.  While we know this is a huge time allotment, the rewards are ‘priceless.’    Training will be provided.

     Mentors:

    • Women are needed to mentor non-traditional women students here at the University of Toledo.  The non – traditional student is defined as having been out of high school for at least nine months but it’s more than that.  Our non-traditional student may be the woman whose financial life has changed; the woman whose children have grown and gone; the single woman with children; or, the woman who may be widowed or divorced - all these women who are seeking to fulfill their greatest potential and are now returning to college for higher education.  They are students who are in need of a little emotional support as they adjust to campus life. They are older students and/or first generation students who could use advice on what to expect as they enter a 21st century university.

This opportunity is perfect for the professional woman or retired professional woman who may be out of the educational environment but has the work  experience and ‘know-how’ to be able to share information and be supportive.  We are in need of volunteers who would be willing to commit as a mentor for one full academic year (September – May).       Training will be provided.

     Work at the Center:

    • The Eberly Center for Women office, located at UT, is also looking for volunteers. We need volunteers to help with the many different facets of our center.  We need public relation specialists, program assistants, research specialists and organizers to head our clothing drive.
    1. Resource and Referral Receptionist:  Respond to questions about UT, about ECW programming, groups, and events, about resources for women at UT, and about resources for women in the Toledo community.
    2. General Program Assistants:  Set up the Jane Eager Eberly Conference Room for Thursday Brown Bag Seminars and other events; post flyers on campus; assist with mailings and the stuffing of “goodie” bags for resource tables; create bulletin board displays; staff resource tables.
    3. Project Succeed and Women in Transition Program Assistants:  Assist with copying and preparing of materials for these groups and programs; conducting follow up phone calls, assisting with orientation, staff resource tables in the community and on campus; assist in groups.
    4. Student and Community Liaisons:  Link departments, student organizations,  and community organizations with the ECW, including underrepresented groups of women such as women with disabilities, lesbian and bi-sexual women, international women, and women of color.

Some volunteer opportunities can be structured for academic credit as independent study, internships, service learning, or as praxis experiences.
