Message from the Chair

Welcome to the website of the Department of Criminal Justice, Social Work and Legal Specialties at the University of Toledo. The Criminal Justice Program is an academic unit within the College of Social Justice and Human Service.

If you are in search of a field of study or you are looking for a university to attend, you undoubtedly have many concerns, including quality of faculty, curriculum, and academic excellence.  What you will find in our department is a dedicated, accessible faculty who have both the academic qualifications and experience needed to educate and career counsel our students. Faculty welcomes the opportunity to interact with students both in and outside the classroom.

On the academic side, our professors have distinguished themselves in their research and scholarly activity.  On the experience side, we have professors who have served as law enforcement officers, as administrators in correctional institutions, as prosecutors and defense attorneys, and who have practiced their professions abroad.  Also important, our faculty are fully integrated into the Lucas County criminal justice community.  Drawing on these connections, we have been successful in building unique internship and research opportunities that benefit our students, university, discipline, and community.

Our bachelor's curriculum prepares the graduate for careers in the criminal justice field, including law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice, probation, and parole, to name a few. Because of its liberal arts core, the program is also good preparation for graduate work and law school.  The degree is designed to prepare a student for a wide range of careers. Our academic advisor works with each of our students to develop an individualized plan of study designed to facilitate the student's realization of his or her educational and career objectives.       

For those interested in pursuing a graduate degree, we offer a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice and a joint Master of Arts and Juris Doctor with the College of Law.  The M.A. program is excellent preparation for students interested in pursuing doctoral work in criminal justice or a related discipline, as well as for practitioners who are interested in broadening their knowledge of the field.
