A Quick Overview of Counselor Education

The Counselor Education programs are housed in the Department of School Psychology, Higher Education, and Counselor Education within the College of Social Justice and Human Service of The University of Toledo. Counselor Education offers a Masters of Arts degree in Counselor Education with concentrations in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, a doctoral degree in Counselor Education, and post-masters training toward endorsement as a licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC) in Ohio. The graduate counseling programs are accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) (http://www.cacrep.org).

About the Faculty

Full-Time CES faculty and staff include John Laux (Ph.D., University of Akron), Professor of Counselor Education & Department Chair;  Nick Piazza (Ph.D., Southern Illinois University-Carbondale), Professor of Counselor Education; Chris Roseman (Ph.D., The University of Toledo), Assistant Professor of Counselor Education; Kathleen Salyers(Ph.D., Ohio University), Associate Professor of Counselor Education; and Sue Martin, Department Secretary.

About the University

The University of Toledo is one of 13 state universities in Ohio. It was established in 1872 and became a member of the state university system in 1967. The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio merged in 2006 to form the third-largest public university operating budget in Ohio. UT is a community built around diverse academic colleges and professional programs matched only by a handful of public universities nationwide, including The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan. UT's main campus, located along the banks of the Ottawa River in a residential section of the city, includes historic buildings, modern facilities, contemporary residence halls, and abundant  green space. The University of Toledo Health Science Campus is home to UT Medical Center hospitals and clinics and many of UT's health-science research and education programs that are teaching the next generation of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals.

Toledo offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities including a world class art museum, zoo, science center, triple A baseball, ECHL hockey, and water sports. In addition, Toledo is within easy driving distance of Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, as well as Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati, Ohio.
