Raymond Marchionni

Raymond Carmine Marchionni, D.M.A., is Professor of Music in the Department of Music at The University of Toledo.  Prior to arriving at Toledo in 2001, he held positions at various universities throughout the country.  His posts have included Professor and Chair of the Department of Music at Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (1997-2001) and Georgia Southern University (1981-1997), Chair of the Division of Fine Arts and Director of the Alexander Center for the Performing Arts at Concord College in West Virginia (1977-81), Assistant Professor of Piano at Coker College in South Carolina (1973-77).

Hereceived his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Piano Performance at The University of Michigan, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at North Texas State University, where he was a teaching assistant in piano.  While at Michigan his academic minors included Classical Studies (Greece and Rome) and Italian Literature.  He took advanced piano study with Daniel Ericourt, artist-in-residence at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, concentrating on the music of Debussy and Ravel.  At UT, he teaches core curriculum music courses: Introduction to Music, Music Theory for the Non-major, and Music Cultures Non-western.

His professional activities include numerous solo piano recitals, performances for national public radio and television, piano accompanist, chamber music player, and conductor of master classes and workshops in piano for various professional piano organizations and college departments of music.  With an interest in interdisciplinary studies, in 2008 he was invited to become a faculty member and a member of the Board of Advisors of the Durrell School of Corfu, a post-graduate seminar school which sponsors interdisciplinary arts and humanities presentations.  The article Robert Schumann: Original Among Music’s Romantics was included as a chapter in the book Creativity, Madness and Civilization (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2007) and his article Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto for Left Hand appears in the book War Literature (also published by the Cambridge Scholars Press in 2009).

Hehas served as a member of various department and University committees and currently is chair of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council of the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Heis a member of the honorary and professional music fraternities Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
