Foundations of Peace Education

The Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership presents a Pedagogy of Peace Concentration in the form of an online graduate certificate program in the Foundations of Peace Education.

Defining the Foundations of Peace Education

The Foundations of Peace Education refers to the integration of teaching method, theoretical frameworks, and the logical structural and value dimensions of the subject matter.  A program in peace education is based, therefore, on the following question:

What theoretical frameworks and learning strategies underline, and can be employed in, the teaching and learning of the concepts, skills, and values of peace (building)?

How? Develop teaching methods (teaching strategies and assessment)

What? Identify concepts, skills and values to teach (peace-learning objectives)

Why?  Grounded in pedagogical, philosophical and psychological frameworks (theoretical and empirical foundation)

The program employs the Foundational disciplinary lenses of Educational Psychology, Educational Theory, and the interdisciplinary framework of the Social Foundations of Education.

Who will benefit?

The certificate program is designed for educational professionals working in a variety of educational environments, ranging from P-12 schools, community colleges, universities, and non-governmental organizations. This certificate will provide students with the concepts, skills, and values to infuse peace education throughout the curriculum, thereby providing them with greater opportunities to be hired in a variety of educational settings.

Program Requirements

The program requires completion of four (12 semester hours) of graduate courses. All courses are offered online (distance learning). Twelve credit hours earned by a non-degree seeking graduate certificate course credit may be applied toward the Masters programs in Educational Psychology (FEEP) or Educational Theory and Social Foundations (ETSF, FOED, FEPE, FEES) or the Doctoral degree in Educational Foundations; however, an admission application to these programs must be field separately.


Program of Study

Complete 12 semester credit hours of required course work.

TSOC 5600/7600 Foundations of Peace Pedagogy (3semester credit hours) (required)
The purpose of this course is to introduce the basic concepts, theories, and approaches to peace education.  The course explores the theories of peace education, including pedagogical approaches to peace-learning.  The course also introduces the substantive areas of peace education.

Prospective Students: Admission Guidelines

The application process for the Certificate Program is entirely completed online. The following are minimum application requirements for admission consideration to the Certificate Program in the Foundations of Peace Education. The University of Toledo application requirements and other relevant information are available at the College of Graduate Studies website and should be able to answer all of your application-related questions. Using the links to the College of Graduate Studies, an applicant can apply to the program by completing paper forms or by submitting an application online.

Admissions Criteria

In addition to the College of Graduate Studies admission requirements, the Graduate Certificate program housed in the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership requires the following from the prospective graduate students:

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year institution. However, if the prospective graduate students are planning to teach in P-12 schools, they must have a teaching licensure in a specific subject area or discipline.
• Official transcripts
• Three recommendation letters, which may come from such sources as the undergraduate major adviser, current employer, school principal or others who are knowledgeable about the applicant's ability to engage in graduate work in the desired program.
• A statement describing the prospective graduate students' background and goals as well as the importance of the degree in achieving those goals.
• The program has selective admissions and may admit a limited number of graduate students. Thus, meeting all formal criteria does not guarantee admission.
• All graduate degree-seeking applicants must apply for admission to the Certificate program prior to graduation.
