These scholarships and awards are for students enrolled in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences.
The application deadlines and processes in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences vary due to the number of different majors within the College. For detailed information on specific scholarships, contact the program director.

Betty J. Lapp Scholarship Fund
Recipient shall be a freshman who has completed one semester, or a sophomore, in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences, with preference given to those majoring in history, economics or political science. Recipient shall have a minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 grading system. The scholarship shall be awarded primarily on academic achievement, with consideration given to financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. One or more scholarships may be awarded. Renewable.

France Stone Foundation College of Arts & Sciences Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded to part or full-time UT students who have declared a major in a program or department in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences, including students who have transferred from Quest into LLSS. The scholarship is based upon financial need in accordance with FAFSA criteria and requires that the LLSS student be enrolled 6 credit hours or more and maintain a 3.0 GPA. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is to be completed annually and on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid by April 1 of each year. This one-year award is renewable, as long as the A&S student making application demonstrates financial need and maintains enrollment status and a 3.0 overall GPA.

Jaine Wyatt Liberal Arts Scholarship
The Jaine Wyatt Liberal Arts Scholarship is for a student currently enrolled the College of Arts and Sciences, pursuing any degree in the liberal arts-defined as majors within the Arts and Humanities divisions. This scholarship is based upon financial need and, secondarily, on the students' GPA. Incoming freshmen or continuing students with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a scale of 4.0 are eligible to make application. Financial need is determined in accordance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) criteria through the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA). The FAFSA form is to be completed annually and on file by April 1.

Buckeye Cable System Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for a full-time junior or senior undergraduate student. Recipient shall be a major in the department with a concentration in broadcast services. Home address must be in the same franchise area as the Cable System. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required. Based on financial need.

William Day Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for a full-time junior news media major who is a member of the Independent Collegian staff. A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required.

Award for outstanding Department of Communication student.

Minnie & Shakee Lacey Scholarship
Scholarships for undergraduate journalism students. Scholarship is based on GPA, extracurricular activities, and employment experience.

Terry L. Marti Scholarship
This scholarship is available to juniors and seniors majoring in the communication area. Recipients must have a 3.0 GPA. Selection is also based on extra-curricular activities and community service.

Margaret Patterson Memorial Scholarship
The Department of Communication faculty awards a stipend of varying amounts to one or more students. Eligibility includes national merit scholars who are planning careers in Journalism and if funding allows, other communication majors. The award is based upon GPA and Junior standing.

Richard Cadwell Pheatt Scholarship
Scholarships for students in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences, with first preference given to students majoring in communications, particularly those in the area of journalism. Recipient shall be a citizen of the United States and shall have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Doug Sinn Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for a student in the Department of Communications majoring in broadcast services at The University of Toledo. Based on academic achievement. Recipients may reapply annually for renewal.

Wilbur Lee Taylor Storyteller Scholarship
The Wilbur Lee Taylor Storyteller Scholarship is for a minority student who is enrolled full-time at The University of Toledo, has sophomore standing, and has a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The recipient will be chosen based on his/her writing ability, financial need, academic merit and community involvement. Applicants must be enrolled in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences and have a major that focuses in the fields of English or Communication. Applicants must also have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid by April 1.

Recipients shall be entering, undergraduate or undergraduate students at UT, majoring in economics. The scholarship supports scholarship and research endeavors including, but not limited to, conference fees and related travel expenses. Award is based on financial need and/or academic merit. Helen M. Fields Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for a graduate student with an excellent academic record in the field of English or education.

Ernest Gray Award
The award is made to a Senior English Major with a GPA of 3.6 or better. Application requires an essay, and a letter of recommendation from an English Department Faculty Member.

Fern R. Kalmbach Memorial Scholarship Fund
Scholarship will awarded annually to two male students in the junior class who are majoring or minoring in English. Recipients must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must exhibit great skill in creative writing. Scholarship will cover all tuition and fees for both students senior year.

Alvin J. Preis Scholarship Fund
Scholarship offered to first-generation full-time students at UT. Shall be majors in history and/or English, who are most qualified in their department, and who have a 3.0 or higher GPA based on a 4.0 scale. Each year this scholarship alternates between the History and English departments. The scholarship is based on financial need and is renewable.

Edward Shapiro English Composition
For undergraduate winners of an annual essay contest conducted by the Department of English.

Edward Shapiro Fund for English Composition II
Three scholarships are offered from this fund:
Two-year scholarship for A&S non-transfer first-year student
This scholarship is based on an essay competition and is open to all accepted, matriculating A&S students who want to participate the student does not need to declare as an English major to be eligible. May be renewed for one additional year, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.
Senior Writing Scholarship
Students may apply for this scholarship in the spring of their junior year. Requires submission of a writing sample and two professor recommendations – one from a UT English Department Faculty member, and one from a faculty member from another UT department. Candidates must be English Department majors in good standing to be eligible for this award.
Senior Writing (Runner-up) Scholarships
The winners of these scholarships will be the four runners-up from the Senior Writing Scholarship competition.

Wilbur Lee Taylor Storyteller Scholarship

Marianne Bigney Scholarship Award in German Studies
The Marianne Bigney fund was established in February 1986 to honor the late Professor Marianne Bigney, who dedicated much of her life to the teaching of students at The University of Toledo. The money in this fund is intended:
- to support incoming first-year students who wish to continue their study of German language, culture, civilization, and literature.
- to support UT undergraduates who wish to continue a course of study in German language, culture, civilization, and literature.
Eligibility Requirements for Entering First-Year Students
Any first-year student entering The University of Toledo who has completed a minimum
of three years of German study in high school or abroad and maintained a B average
in those German courses may apply for financial assistance on the basis of merit.
Preference is given to students who have declared a major or minor in German. During
their first year at UT Bigney scholarship recipients must complete two German courses
at the intermediate level or above and earn a B average in these courses.
The maximum amount of the scholarship is $1,000 and is non-renewable; however, the
student may apply for subsequent support through the Bigney Scholarship Award for
UT undergraduates (see below).
Eligibility Requirement for UT Undergraduates
Any undergraduate student at The University of Toledo who will be enrolled in a German
course above the intermediate level during the academic terms of the award year is
eligible to apply for financial assistance on the basis of merit. Preference is given
to students who have declared a major or minor in German. Students must complete
an average of one German course during each term of the award year.
The maximum amount of the scholarship is $1,500 and is renewable for a maximum of
three additional years (for a maximum of four years for continuing UT students). Students
must re-apply each year.
Administration of the Award
An application from an entering first-year student consists of a completed application
form, a copy of the official high school transcript, and a letter of recommendation
from the student's high school German teacher.
An application from a UT undergraduate consists of a completed application form and
a letter of recommendation from a university instructor.
Awards will be made by the selection committee based on the merit of the applicant
and the availability of funds. Members of the committee are Juergen G. Mudrow (Administrator
of the Fund, Professor Emeritus of German), Dr. Ruth Hottell (Chair of the Department
of Foreign Languages), William J. O'Neal (Professor of History), and Friederike Emonds(Co-Administrator
of the Fund, Professor of German).
The deadline for applications is 1 April. Notification of awards will be made no
later than 1 May. All application materials are to be submitted to Dr. Friederike
Emonds, Department of Foreign Languages, University of Toledo.
Herbert Schering Exchange Program & Award in German Studies
The Schering Fund was established in February 1972 to honor the late Professor Herbert
B. Schering, who served The University of Toledo for 39 years. The money in this
fund is intended:
1. to assist UT students who wish to study German language, culture, civilization,
and literature:
a. in an approved program in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland.
b. in an approved program in the United States where total immersion in
the German language is assured.
2. to assist UT students who wish to pursue an approved internship or work experience
in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland;
3. to assist UT students pursuing research in German-related areas, e.g., archival
research, either abroad or in the United States;
4. to assist students who graduate with a degree in German from The University
of Toledo and wish to pursue a graduate degree in German, and
5. to support the continuation of relationships established as part of the exchange
program between the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium and The University of Toledo from 1980
to 2005.
Eligibility Requirements for Undergraduates and Graduates
Any undergraduate student seeking financial assistance under 1-3 above must have completed
at least two German courses at The University of Toledo and have at least sophomore
standing at the time of the award. Preference will be given to students who have
declared a major or minor in German. Preference also will be given for 3 above to
graduate students in the Department of History. Students receiving an award are expected
to complete a degree at The University of Toledo. Support to any student will not
exceed $3,500 in any given year.

Awards will be made by the selection committee based on the merit of the applicant,

Scholarship for an entering freshman student in history. Student must be an Ohio high school graduate and rank in the top 15% of graduating class. Scholarship is based on financial need, academic promise and is renewable if student maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Paul Block Endowed Scholarship Fund
Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students with financial need, studying one of the following disciplines: art, art history, classics, English, foreign languages, history, humanities, music, philosophy or theater. Scholarship is renewable as long as recipients maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2.

Ernest W. Dewey Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences. Student may be majoring in philosophy, classics, English, economics, foreign languages and literature, linguistics, history or political science. Scholarship is based on merit but financial need may also be a consideration. Must be a U.S. citizen and have a minimum GPA of 3.2. Scholarship is renewable.

James G. Southworth Scholarship
Scholarships for full-time students majoring in one or more fields of the humanities (English, history, foreign languages, philosophy, music, theater/film, art or art history, interdisciplinary humanities, as well as other interdisciplinary programs) and demonstrating academic achievement.

Scholarship for a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences. George P. Guthrie Scholarship in Philosophy
Scholarship for undergraduate or graduate students majoring in philosophy. Recipients shall have completed at least one course in ancient philosophy. Awarded on the basis of merit to recognize superior achievements in the study of philosophy.

Please note that all scholarships offered by the Political Science Department at The University of Toledo are for students majoring in political science and attending The University of Toledo. All majors will be automatically considered for all departmental scholarships therefore, no formal application is necessary.
Jon M. & Edward W. Binder Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for an undergraduate student in political science entering his/her junior or senior year. Applicants should have a GPA of at least 3.0, demonstrate sustained interest and success in other academic disciplines, and be a good University citizen as reflected in substantial commitment to intercollegiate athletics, student government, or other significant extracurricular activities.
Albin Czerniakowski Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for a junior or senior political science major who demonstrates financial need. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
Michael V. DiSalle Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships for junior or senior political science students interested in government or public service who demonstrate financial need and academic excellence.
Sharron E. Doerner Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for juniors or seniors majoring in political science who have high academic standing. Award can be based on need and is renewable.
Draghici European Scholarship in Political Science & Public Administration
Scholarship for students in public administration masters program, or students majoring in political science. Scholarship is based on merit. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
O. Garfield Jones Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships for sophomore, junior, or senior political science majors.
Edgar T. Kilbride Memorial Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for a sophomore, junior, or senior political science major who has demonstrated academic achievement and has completed a substantial research paper on community politics or local elections.
Daniel G. McNamara Memorial Award
Scholarship for a graduate student in public administration with high academic achievement and an interest in community service. Financial need is not a consideration.
Barney Quilter Good Government Scholarship Fund
Incoming junior or senior meeting a majority of the following criteria: (a) graduated from an Ohio public or private high school in the metropolitan Toledo area (b) major in political science (c) be interested in pursuing a career in government service (d) preference given if in need of financial assistance (e) eligible for membership in political science honor society (f) maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and in political science (g) involved in student government.
Joseph Tomasi Scholarship Fund
Scholarships for senior political science majors with a GPA of 3.0 or better and demonstrated financial need.
David Stevens Wilson Scholarship
Scholarship for undergraduate political science majors at the University of Toledo. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA. This scholarship is renewable and is not based on financial need.

Ariss Family Pre-Med Fund
Recipients shall be juniors or seniors in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences . Students shall be biology majors in pre-med in the honors program. Recipients must have a 3.8 GPA or higher. This scholarship is not renewable.

Howard H. M. Bowman Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships for undergraduate students in pre-med. Based on academic achievement.

Dr. Edward l. and Norma R. Doermann Scholarship
Scholarship for junior honor students majoring in pre-med or taking the four-year nursing course at UT. The scholarship will be for each of two years and will alternate between the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences and the College of Nursing (i.e., a pre-med student will get it in year one, have it renewed for year two then, a nursing student will get it in year three and have it renewed for year four). The scholarship is based on academic achievement, leadership and citizenship, career objectives, community activities, and financial need.

Scholarships for undergraduate pre-med students. Based on academic achievement and financial need.

Franklyn & Hilda Hawkins Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to deserving pre-medical students with financial need. Amounts are variable awards made to freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior ranked students. The scholarship is renewable as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Scholarship for highest junior and senior academic achiever enrolled in The University of Toledo's pre-med program.

Dr. and Mrs. A.H. Steinberg Scholarship
Applicants should be freshmen through senior ranking, maintaining full-time status in UT's pre-med/pre-dental program. Must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Dr. Lance and Diana H. (Dee) Talmage Scholarship
Recipients shall be juniors at UT in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences. Each recipient will hold the scholarship for two years alternating between the majors of Pre-Med and Education. Recipients shall have been involved in campus activities and specifically community activities. A minimum GPA of 3.25 is required. Scholarship is based on financial aid.

Robert J. & Anne Evans Burns Scholarship
Preference shall be given to psychology students who have demonstrated an interest in Adult Development or Industrial/Organizational Psychology. If no candidate is eligible, the scholarship shall be made available to any University student regardless of college affiliation, who demonstrated interest in gerontology. The renewable award shall be available to full-time students of the sophomore level or higher with a of 3.00 GPA or higher.

Samar EL-OKDI Memorial Scholarship
Recipients shall be UT students with a preference given to juniors or seniors and to students studying psychology with an interest in anthropology and/or women's studies. Recipients shall be students who have overcome financial, emotional or cultural barriers in their lives. Recipients shall be active in community service and very open minded in the areas of race, religion, gender and politics. Recipients shall maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA with some flexibility given to students who meet all other criteria.

James M. & Carol L. Mack Scholarship in Undergraduate Education in Psychology
Scholarship for a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior psychology major with high academic achievement. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Tyner Scholarship
Scholarship for a full-time graduate student who is working on a master of education degree in special education or for a graduate student majoring in psychology. Student must have an interest in the causes and care of autism.

Dr. Mary Louise Glen Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for females majoring in sociology and entering their second year at UT. Preference given to non-traditional students (age 25 and older). Applicants may be part-time or full-time students. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required. Preference is given to the student with the highest GPA. Previous recipients who meet the requirements may reapply.

Tapestry Scholarship
The Tapestry Scholarship is offered and awarded by the African-American employees of the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center. It is available to entering freshmen and continuing UT students who will be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students. To be considered for this need-based scholarship, applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid. First preference will be given to students majoring in criminal justice, social work or sociology.
