These scholarships and awards are for students enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences.
The application deadlines and processes in the College of Arts and Sciences vary due to the number of different majors within the College. For detailed information on specific scholarships, contact your department chairperson.
Note: All need-based scholarships require that a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) be on file by April 1. Students may complete the FAFSA on the web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov or students may contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at 419.530.8700. The University of Toledo school code for completing the FAFSA is 003131. Information provided on each scholarship is subject to change.

Betty J. Lapp Scholarship Fund
Recipient shall be a freshman who has completed one semester, or a sophomore, in the College of Arts and Sciences, with preference given to those majoring in history, economics or political science. Recipient shall have a minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 grading system. The scholarship shall be awarded primarily on academic achievement, with consideration given to financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. One or more scholarships may be awarded. Renewable.

France Stone Foundation College of Arts & Sciences Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded to part or full-time UT students who have declared a major in a program or department in the College of Arts and Sciences, including students who have transferred from Quest into A&S. The scholarship is based upon financial need in accordance with FAFSA criteria and requires that the A&S student be enrolled 6 credit hours or more and maintain a 3.0 GPA. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is to be completed annually and on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid by April 1 of each year. This one-year award is renewable, as long as the A&S student making application demonstrates financial need and maintains enrollment status and a 3.0 overall GPA.

Jaine Wyatt Liberal Arts Scholarship
The Jaine Wyatt Liberal Arts Scholarship is for a student currently enrolled the College of Arts and Sciences, pursuing any degree in the liberal arts-defined as majors within the Arts and Humanities divisions. This scholarship is based upon financial need and, secondarily, on the students' GPA. Incoming freshmen or continuing students with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a scale of 4.0 are eligible to make application. Financial need is determined in accordance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) criteria through the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA). The FAFSA form is to be completed annually and on file by April 1.

Art Interest, Inc. Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for an outstanding entering freshman studio art or art education major that recognizes talent and academic achievement. A portfolio review and a minimum GPA of 2.5 are required.

Athena Art Award
Scholarship for female art students. Recipient is recommended by faculty to the Athena Art Society Committee. Student must conduct independent portfolio, transcript, and application reviews.

Susanna L. Clement Scholarship
Scholarships for entering freshmen majoring in studio art, art history, or art education, as well as to two additional upper-class awards are made annually upon submission of transcripts and portfolio review. Students must show exceptional promise of creative ability and/or academic excellence.

Sara Jane Dehoff Art Scholarship
Scholarship for entering female freshman at UT who is majoring in the visual arts. Candidates shall submit a portfolio, slides or video. Scholarship is based on financial need and is offered for a four-year period with the provision that the recipient maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Matthew K. Morgan Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in the fine arts with preference given to a drawing and/or painting major. Must be a U.S. citizen and be enrolled regularly at UT.

Mark Palmer Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship to support travel necessary for a junior or senior student undertaking an independent research project in the history of art or architecture.

William L. Rabideau Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for junior or senior students majoring in fine arts. First preference will be given to drawing majors. Recipients shall be superior students who demonstrate financial need and have GPA's of 3.0 or higher in their major. Scholarship may be renewed.

James G. Southworth Art Scholarship
Scholarship for an outstanding undergraduate studio fine arts major who is involved in the creation of ceramics. Non-renewable.

Toledo Artists Club Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for a full or part-time junior or senior majoring in art education, art history or studio art. This non-renewable scholarship rotates through three programs every three years. Overall 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in the major are required.

Sinclair Walbridge Scholarship
Scholarships for entering freshmen pursuing studies in studio art, art history, or art education. Non-renewable.

Dr. Peter C. Fraleigh Memorial Scholarship
Recipient shall be an undergraduate at UT who is majoring in biology or earth, ecological and environmental services. Recipient must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipient shall be interested in a career in ecology or biology and shall have submitted a 500 word essay to describe why they are interested in the field.

C.V. Wolfe Scholarship in Natural Sciences
Scholarship for an entering freshman student majoring in geology, environmental sciences, or environmental studies. Student must be an Ohio high school graduate and rank in the top 15% of graduating class. Scholarship is based on financial need, academic promise and is renewable if student maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Scholarship for a junior or senior chemistry or chemical engineering major. Scholarship is based on academic achievement and leadership.

Arthur H. & Virginia R. Black Academic Scholarship
Scholarship for a sophomore or junior chemistry major who is pursuing a career as a professional chemist. A minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.5 in chemistry is required. Juniors may reapply for senior year.

Arthur H. Black Award in Analytical Chemistry
Undergraduate chemistry major who has shown outstanding ability in the area of analytical chemistry.

CAI - NWO Scholarship
Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens majoring in Chemistry or Biology. Recipients must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. First preference will be given to CAI - NWO member dependents.

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship Fund
Scholarship established by faculty of Chemistry Department to be awarded to chemistry majors. Recipients will be selected by Academic Achievement Committee.

Dr. Alfred Foster Chemistry Award
Scholarship for a sophomore, junior, or senior student with outstanding performance in last year’s class of Chemistry for the Life Sciences 1210-1220.

David R. Hostetler Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for a sophomore student in the Chemistry program in the College of Arts & Sciences. This scholarship is based on academic achievement and the student is expected to maintain a minimum 2.5 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA in chemistry courses.

Henry R. Kreider Scholarships in Chemistry
Scholarships for junior and senior chemistry majors based on merit, financial need and character.

James A. Poure Scholarship
Scholarship for juniors, seniors or graduate students in the chemistry department. Recipients shall meet the minimum academic requirements for acceptance to or retention within the Department of Chemistry. Recipients are selected on the basis of merit and a formal application to the Department of Chemistry Academic Achievement Committee including an essay. Financial need will only be considered if necessary. The scholarship is renewable upon application of any current recipient.

William B. Silverman Chemistry Scholarship
Scholarship for undergraduate chemistry majors at the University of Toledo. Scholarships are based on financial need and are renewable if the recipient reapplies.

David Turnbull Scholarship in Materials Science
Scholarship for graduate level students with majors in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, and/or Engineering who are pursuing a Materials Science option as part of their degree program. Award is based on academic and research excellence and not based on financial need. Renewable.

Buckeye Cable System Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for a full-time junior or senior undergraduate student. Recipient shall be a major in the department with a concentration in broadcast services. Home address must be in the same franchise area as the Cable System. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required. Based on financial need.

Minnie & Shakee Lacey Scholarship
Scholarships for undergraduate journalism students. Scholarship is based on GPA, extracurricular activities, and employment experience.

Terry L. Marti Scholarship
This scholarship is available to juniors and seniors majoring in the communication area. Recipients must have a 3.0 GPA. Selection is also based on extra-curricular activities and community service.

Margaret Patterson Memorial Scholarship
The Department of Communication faculty awards a stipend of varying amounts to one or more students. Eligibility includes national merit scholars who are planning careers in Journalism and if funding allows, other communication majors. The award is based upon GPA and Junior standing.

Richard Cadwell Pheatt Scholarship
Scholarships for students in the College of Arts and Sciences, with first preference given to students majoring in communications, particularly those in the area of journalism. Recipient shall be a citizen of the United States and shall have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Doug Sinn Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for a student in the Department of Communications majoring in broadcast services at The University of Toledo. Based on academic achievement. Recipients may reapply annually for renewal.

Wilbur Lee Taylor Storyteller Scholarship
The Wilbur Lee Taylor Storyteller Scholarship is for a minority student who is enrolled full-time at The University of Toledo, has sophomore standing, and has a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The recipient will be chosen based on his/her writing ability, financial need, academic merit and community involvement. Applicants must be enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and have a major that focuses in the fields of English or Communication. Applicants must also have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid by April 1.

Jeffrey A. Black Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for full-time students entering their junior or senior year, majoring in environmental sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences. Must have and maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA in their major and must maintain a 3.0 GPA overall. Applicants must also submit an essay describing how they plan to become stewards of the environment. May be renewed based on the aforementioned criteria however, current recipients must reapply.

Thomas A. Hogan Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for sophomore, junior, senior student majoring in geology or exercise science who has maintained a 3.0 minimum GPA and who holds a part-time job. EEES awards their scholarship for summer field work. Awarded in alternating years by the Department of Earth, Ecology, and Environmental Sciences or by the College of Health & Human Services. Check with respective college.

Dr. Lon Ruedisili Hydrogeology/Environmental Geology Fund
Award for geology majors specializing in hydrogeology or environmental geology in support of either senior year thesis research or graduate research costs.

Toledo Gem and Rockhound Club Scholarship
Scholarship for a full-time junior or senior geology major who is a U.S. citizen and preferably from Northwest Ohio or Southeast Michigan. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in the major and 2.0 overall.

Recipients shall be full-time students, having attained at least sophomore status at UT, and shall be majors in Environmental Science with a 3.2 or higher GPA.

Edward Shapiro Economics Scholarship II
Recipients shall be entering, undergraduate or undergraduate students at UT, majoring in economics. The scholarship supports scholarship and research endeavors including, but not limited to, conference fees and related travel expenses. Award is based on financial need and/or academic merit. A scholarship to attract and support of superior candidate for a Master's degree in English with an emphasis on teaching composition.

Scholarship for promising full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the Department of English Language and Literature, with preference given to students in creative writing or drama.

Brand Senior Scholarship
Scholarship for the senior year of study for outstanding undergraduate student in the Department of English Language and Literature, with preference given to students interested in creative writing, drama or seeking admission to graduate school.

Brand Summer Fellowship
Scholarship to support participation by a full-time English major undergraduate or graduate student in summer research or writing program.

Helen M. Fields Scholarship Fund
Scholarship for a graduate student with an excellent academic record in the field of English or education.

Fern R. Kalmbach Memorial Scholarship Fund
Scholarship will awarded annually to two male students in the junior class who are majoring or minoring in English. Recipients must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must exhibit great skill in creative writing. Scholarship will cover all tuition and fees for both students senior year.

Alvin J. Preis Scholarship Fund
Scholarship offered to first-generation full-time students at UT. Shall be majors in history and/or English, who are most qualified in their department, and who have a 3.0 or higher GPA based on a 4.0 scale. Each year this scholarship alternates between the History and English departments. The scholarship is based on financial need and is renewable.

Edward Shapiro English Composition
For undergraduate winners of an annual essay contest conducted by the Department of English.

Edward Shapiro Fund for English Composition II
Three scholarships are offered from this fund:
Two-year scholarship for A&S non-transfer first-year student
This scholarship is based on an essay competition and is open to all accepted, matriculating A&S students who want to participate the student does not need to declare as an English major to be eligible. May be renewed for one additional year, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.
Senior Writing Scholarship
Students may apply for this scholarship in the spring of their junior year. Requires submission of a writing sample and two professor recommendations – one from a UT English Department Faculty member, and one from a faculty member from another UT department. Candidates must be English Department majors in good standing to be eligible for this award.
Senior Writing (Runner-up) Scholarships
The winners of these scholarships will be the four runners-up from the Senior Writing Scholarship competition.

Wilbur Lee Taylor Storyteller Scholarship
The Wilbur Lee Taylor Storyteller Scholarship is for a minority student who is enrolled full-time at The University of Toledo, has sophomore standing, and has a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Marianne Bigney Scholarship Award in German Studies
Scholarship for any first year student entering The University of Toledo who has completed three years of German study in high school or abroad and maintained a B average in those German courses may apply for financial assistance on the basis of merit. Preference will be given to the student who has declared a major or minor in German. Recipients must register for an average of one German course per term during the award year and must maintain a B average in their college German classes. Any undergraduate student who is enrolled in a German class above the intermediate level is eligible to apply for financial assistance on the basis of need. Preference will be given to students who declare a major or minor in German. Recipients must register for an average of one German course per term during the award year.

Herbert Schering Exchange Program & Award in German Studies
Scholarship for any undergraduate student taking part in the UT-Darmstadt Exchange Program who has completed the basic German requirement at The University of Toledo before traveling to Darmstadt may apply for financial assistance to participate in program. Support will be based on merit and need. Any undergraduate student seeking financial assistance for other German programs must have completed two German courses at the advanced level and have at least sophomore standing at the time of the award. Preference will be given to students who have declared a major or minor in German. Students receiving an award of study outside The University of Toledo are expected to return to UT to complete their undergraduate degree. Any graduating UT student who has majored in German may apply for financial assistance to pursue a graduate degree in German.

Preference shall be given to psychology students who have demonstrated an interest in Adult Development or Industrial/Organizational Psychology. If no candidate is eligible, the scholarship shall be made available to any University student regardless of college affiliation, who demonstrated interest in gerontology. The renewable award shall be available to full-time students of the sophomore level or higher with a of 3.00 GPA or higher.

Recipients shall be UT students with a preference given to juniors or seniors and to students studying psychology with an interest in anthropology and/or women's studies. Recipients shall be active in community service and very open minded in the areas of race, religion, gender and politics. Recipients shall maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA with some flexibility given to students who meet all other criteria.

The Tapestry Scholarship is offered and awarded by the African-American employees of the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center. It is available to entering freshmen and continuing UT students who will be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students. To be considered for this need-based scholarship, applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid. First preference will be given to students majoring in criminal justice, social work or sociology.
