Thesis and Dissertation

ETD Preparation and Submission Workshops for Main Campus Programs

This program provided an overview of the electronic submission process for graduate theses and dissertations within the context of graduation requirements for the Graduate College Office on the Main Campus as well as a presentation of the submission steps for OhioLINK. Additional sources of information was provided to students with the tools necessary to complete the electronic submission process.

ETD Open Labs: Formatting and Submission

This open lab was designed to provide one-on-one assistance with formatting your electronic thesis or dissertation to comply with UT Graduate Council regulations, and submitting to OhioLINK (and ProQuest UMI, for dissertations). In particular, we helped with using Word and the newly released Word templates to achieve correct formatting.

Career Development

Career Exploration and Self Assessment

Career planning throughout your graduate program would help you to identify and achieve your professional goals. The planning process begins with self assessment.  This program would help you to understand that effective career decision-making begins with knowing yourself.  Topics covered in this program included exploring interests, skills, values, increasing career awareness; and understanding the connection between degree/education and careers.

Resumes and Curriculum Vitae 

This session advised graduate students on effective methods for writing an advanced resume or curriculum vitae (CV). Also, we included guidelines for both electronic databases and conventional uses.

This program was designed to assist graduate students in acquiring the skills and knowledge required to be successful in a job search.  Information was given to assist students in identifying options, translating credentials and skills, networking, interviewing, and negotiating salary and benefits.

Graduate Writing 

Copyright 101: Vital Information for Graduate Student Creators and Consumers

This session covered fundamental principles of copyright law as it applies to the graduate student’s own composition and to the use of copyrighted material in his/her document. Handouts included a Fair Use checklist and case study that was discussed during the session.

Literature Reviews: The Foundation for Focused Research

Literature Reviews were conducted by writers of theses/dissertations in all disciplines, yet typically only a third of incoming graduate students know the purpose of conducting one, and even less are aware of the stylistic and organizational conventions of writing one.  This session covered the basics of a literature review, with additional resources tailored for various disciplines as a hand-out.
