Graduate Opportunity Assistantship Program (GOAP)
History
The Graduate Opportunity Assistantship Program (GOAP), formerly called the Graduate Minority Assistantship Program (GMAP), is part of the College of Graduate Studies Opportunity and Outreach Initiatives which seeks to ensure that adequate funding opportunities exist for all students, and specifically those who have overcome significant educational and personal challenges to pursue higher education but possess the skill, leadership and ability to make a significant impact in their chosen field. The scholarship seeks to ensure that students traditionally under represented nationally in graduate education, have access to assistance that might encourage their participation.
Scholarship
The GOAP provides financial support guaranteed by the College of Graduate Studies in the first two academic semesters for masters students and four academic semesters for students seeking a doctorate, and is subsequently supported at the departmental level for the remainder of the academic career. Financial support is not expected to exceed 4 academic semester for the completion of a masters degree or 8 academic semesters for the completion of the doctoral degree. Students in two semester or less “accelerated” graduate programs will receive only one year of support and will not have the opportunity to renew their award. This scholarship is a collaborative effort between the academic department and the College of Graduate Studies, please note that not all departments provide match funding for this award.
Monetary Provisions
The College of Graduate Studies provides a scholarship equivalent to the full applicable tuition (including out of state surcharge), a graduate stipend according to the programs standard rate for the first two academic semesters for masters students and four semesters for PhD students. Departmental match for the subsequent two semester of the masters degree or four semesters of the PhD degree must be guaranteed by the department to which the student is admitted.
Student Qualification
This financial award is for domestic students only. Applications are encouraged from populations traditionally under-represented in their discipline. Students must be regularly admitted to their program and seeking a Masters or PhD degree. Non-degree, special status, certificate program, part-time (less than 12 credit hours) and provisional admits are not eligible for application or award. The awards are awarded annually with support beginning in the fall semester.
Participating Graduate Programs
Because there is a necessity for a departmental match in funds, some departments may not choose to participate in the GOAP scholarship program. (Please note that JD, PharmD and MD applicants are not considered for this award).
