Historical Sketch

The photographs in this collection have been donated by Toledo collector and UT Alumnus Donald D. Duhaime who graduated from the University in 1940. The pictures are eclectic and although the main focus is Civil War and 19th Century photographs, there are a few photographs from the first half of the 20th century.   Many of these photographs were purchased individually from collectors or dealers and contain little, if any, documentary evidence regarding identity or location.  However, they can provide a great deal of ancillary information about general social and cultural trends in the 19th Century including a perspective on fashion, housing, transportation, beliefs (including those on death) and music.

Scope and Content Note

The photographs have been arranged into seven series, S1. People, S2. Death, S3. Buildings, S4. Landscape/Nature, S5. Industry and Transportation, S6. Special Series, and S7. Oversized.  One of the most common subdivisions  -- identified and unidentified refers to any indication given on the photograph itself as to the date, location, or identity of the image.  This information is often sporadic and piecemeal but can provide important historical context for many of these images.

The first series, People, has been arranged into four subseries, Individuals, Couples, Unidentified Groups and Identified Groups. The Individual and Couples subseries has been broken down into photographs of babies, children, identified and unidentified adults. The Unidentified and Identified Group subseries consists of groups that were posed or unposed, and whose picture was taken indoors or outdoors.

The second series, Death, shows the 19th century preoccupation with death. These photographs include corpses and funeral flower arrangements.

The third series, Buildings, has been arranged into buildings that are identified and unidentified. They include pictures of homes, city buildings, and monuments.

The fourth series, Landscape/Nature, has been broken down into identified and unidentified landscape pictures. The pictures are from all around the world and include professional photography as well as amateur snapshots.

The fifth series, Industry and Transportation, includes photographs of trains, horse-drawn wagons, automobiles, construction projects, and industrial machines. They have been divided into identified and unidentified pictures.

The sixth series, Special Series, is comprised of series of photographs compiled by one person on a particular theme. They include photographs of a house in Troy, Ohio, an air show, confirmation and senior pictures, vacation snapshots, and military aircraft.

The final series, Oversized, is comprised of photographs from the first five series which were too large to be contained in the normal page box. These photographs consist of Individual Males, Individual Females, Group Outdoors, Group Indoors, Death, Landscape/Nature, Industry and Transportation, and Buildings.
