Biographical Sketch

 

            The Landmarks Committee is a committee of the Toledo-Maumee Valley Historical Society dedicated to preserving historic structures in the Toledo area.  In 1980-1981, the Landmarks Committee worked jointly with the Toledo Camera Club (also known as the Photo Arts Club) to document the architecture of two Catholic churches--St. Ann Roman Catholic Church at 1105 W. Bancroft Street (currently called St. Martin dePorres), and St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 130 Avondale.  The project was undertaken following the burning of St. Patrick's steeple on September 9, 1980, after it was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm.  The Landmarks Committee felt it was important to visually document both St. Patrick's and St. Ann's to ensure a record of both the interiors and exteriors of these two historic churches for the future.

 

Scope and Content Note

 

The collection consists of black and white photographs of the interiors and exteriors of St. Ann's Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Catholic Church as they appeared in 1980 and 1981.  The collection also contains slides of St. Ann's.  No slides exist for St. Patrick's.  An index identifying the photographs is filed at the front of each folder with the numbers of the photographs noted on the verso.  Related correspondence includes an Ohio Historic Inventory form for St. Ann's, and correspondence related to the project to document the churches.
