Study Abroad
Dr. Patterson has conducted research and consulted with organizations in Southern
Africa for over twenty years. In November 2012 he will investigate renewable energy
and service delivery issues in South Africa. During the first ten days of the following
month, he will assist the College of Business and Innovation in leading graduate students
on a study abroad experience in South Africa. Dr. Patterson will provide an opportunity
for Africana Studies and other students to study abroad in South Africa and the region
during the summer of 2013. You too can gain a critical understanding of the complexities
of South African society, enrich your perspective on global society, learn the mechanics
of international field research, acquire keener insight into the racial issues in
the United States by studying another society up close that is also struggling with
issues of multiracial democracy and economic inequality, earn credit towards your
degree, and have a fantastic time in one of the most interesting and beautiful countries
in the world.
Contact Dr. Patterson for details about study abroad in Southern Africa during the
summer of 2013. Future groups will focus on sustainability—including renewable energy—and
social entrepreneurship with respect to public policy, commercial investment, and
grassroots perspectives.
