Shapiro Scholarships for Economics Majors
Through the generosity of Professor Edward Shapiro, the Economics Department has scholarships,
research fellowships and research awards available for students majoring in economics.
Professor Edward Shapiro grew up in Toledo and received his undergraduate degree in
economics from The University of Toledo. He earned a master’s from the Ohio State
University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He then returned to Toledo, where
he was a professor of economics from 1967 until his retirement in 1989.

Shapiro Scholar
The Shapiro Scholar represents the very best in UT students. The Shapiro Scholar
will have an excellent academic record, good communication skills and will show great
promise for an outstanding career in economics. The Shapiro Scholar will receive a
$5,000 scholarship, with reapplication necessary each year to continue receiving the
scholarship.
Requirements:
- Full-time student status
- At least a 3.5 GPA overall and 3.3 GPA in economics for continuing students; at least a 3.5 high school GPA and a 26 ACT composite score (or equivalent) for first-year students
- Submission of an essay, with the topic to be determined by the Shapiro Endowment Committee.
