Why Philosophy?

Philosophy is central to the intellectual life of the university and is indispensable to any well-rounded education. It asks questions like, "What kinds of lives are 'good lives'? What is true and how do we tell the difference between the true and the false? Why is there something rather than nothing?" Asking these questions focuses your thinking through the development of language and logic skills. We learn that we can change our lives by transforming our ideas and values.

Why Religious Studies?

Religion grapples with our deepest questions about the meaning of life and how we are to live. In the religious studies program at The University of Toledo you'll explore how the world’s religions answer these questions and how religion shapes the world’s political and cultural landscape.

UToledo’s Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is one of the country’s only departments to have community-funded endowed chairs in Catholic, Islamic and Jewish studies. We are also one of the first programs to offer a concentration in religious diversity. This concentration builds on our faculty's expertise in the field. Students study what happens when different religions encounter each other and how to make these encounters an opportunity for growth and understanding.
