Peer Mentors for the MLSLLC
Peer Mentor Job Description
The Multicultural Leadership and Service Living Learning Community (MLSLLC) is open to all UT students who have a passion for community outreach and public service, and who have an interest in developing a culture of academic success in an ethnically, religious, and gender diverse student environment. Peer Mentors assist freshman students in their transition from High School to college, both academically and socially. Mentors are not required to live on campus but are encouraged to do so in order to be more easily accessible to other students.
Responsibilities
- Attend all training sessions and scheduled mentor meetings
- Weekly communication with mentees
- Regularly attend service and multicultural programs with mentees
- Be a role model for learning community residents
- Abide by all UT policies, rules and regulations
- Appropriately log and document all mentee activities
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources
- Host one program per semester
- Be available to answer student questions and concerns
- Work closely with the MLSLLC Advisory Board staff to improve the residential learning community
- Additional responsibilities as determined by the MLSLLC Advisor Board, or designated mentor coordinator
Skills and Abilities
- Be a second year student (or above) in good academic standing
- Have excellent communication skills
- Possess strong time management skills
- Exhibit resiliency in challenging situations
- Be an excellent role model
- Enjoy working with people
- Familiarity with UT resources and possess pride for the school and residential community
Organizational Relationships
- Reports to MLSLLC Director or designated MLSLLC mentor coordinator
- Works closely with Residence Life staff
Compensation
- Compensation includes minimum $250 stipend pending full completion of 150 community service hours, all programming requirements and a satisfactory evaluation (to be assessed at the end of each semester).
Training
Training will be provided throughout the 2012-2013 academic year and prior to the start of each semester. The tentative dates for the initial training sessions are the week of August 20, 2012. The times and dates for training are subject to change.
