RESEARCH INTERESTS

I have held faculty appointments in Departments of Physiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Medical Research in Colleges of Medicine at major U.S. and Canadian universities. My research and teaching expertise is in Molecular Biology, Hormone Action, Metabolic Regulation and Nutritional Biochemistry. My laboratory investigated dietary and hormonal regulation of the synthesis of lipogenic enzymes (especially malic enzyme). We were the first to clone cDNAs for malic enzyme and fatty acid synthase. Before becoming a college, and closing my research laboratory, we (and others) had established that transcription regulated synthesis of these enzymes, and had begun to identify and characterize the DNA-binding properties of hormone receptors and transcription factors involved in the regulation.

I was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry for 11 years and a member of the JBC’s editorial board for 21 years. I also served 5-year terms as Associate Editor for the Annual Review of Nutrition and the Journal of Lipid Research. I have served on Study Sections for NIH, the USDA and AHA, and on review panels for the VA, DoD and regional granting agencies.

Over the past 14 years, I have held administrative positions at Ohio State, the University of Toledo and Alfaisal University. At Alfaisal, I was Provost and Acting President and responsible for all aspects of the start-up of a new, private, non-profit university in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Alfaisal’s aspiration is to be a world-class, student-centered research university offering instruction in English in Life Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Business. Through problem-based and experiential learning, Alfaisal will graduate problem-solvers and leaders who will lead the future economic and social development of Saudi Arabia and will serve as a model for other universities in the Kingdom and the region. The first class was admitted in the Fall of 2008.
