Hampton on the Trail 2009 - ARCHIVE

We are creating an endowed scholarship fund to perpetually
honor
Dr. Hampton by annually awarding:
2 Nursing student and 1 Physician Assistant student awards
About Dr. James A. Hampton (1948-2009)
James Hampton PhD, was a long-time resident of the Toledo-area who
came to The University of Toledo (Formerly Medical College of Ohio at Toledo - MCO) in 1986 to work in the laboratory and
ended up teaching
at the University for over 20 years. Dr. Hampton produced research (credited with four patents, 41 published articles
and abstracts in scientific journals, 29 papers and eight chapters in peer-reviewed books) and taught Pathophysiology courses
to students in
multiple disciplines (Physician Assistant Studies, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Medicine and the Basic Health Sciences). In
2004, he became a
tenured professor and received the Prism Award for teaching excellence in the UT College of Nursing.
In 2007, Dr. Hampton was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou
Gehrig’s disease. Shortly after the diagnosis, this progressive neurodegenerative disease forced him to retire from the work
that he
so loved. In 2009, he was named emeritus professor in the College of Nursing. On December 7, 2009, with his family at his
side, Dr.
Hampton passed away. “Hampton on the Trail” is an annual event to honor the man who has touched the lives of so many at
The University of Toledo and whose love of the Maumee River inspired this event. The James Hampton Scholarship Fund benefits
students who
excel in the pathophysiology courses that Jim taught here at The University of Toledo (specifically Nursing and Physician
Assistant students).
We hope that you will support our efforts to endow this fund so that Dr. Hampton will be perpetually honored.

THANKS to all who participated on Saturday, May 2, 2009
at Side Cut Metropark in Maumee, Ohio. On a beautiful
Saturday morning, over 150 people attended the
2nd Annual Hampton on the Trail 5k Run & 3k Walk.
This year's event raised over $5,000.00!
