Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Action
HEALL Evacuates the Collier Building!
These are photos from the Hospital Evacuation exercise that included medical students
from the Health Education Across Latitudes and Longitudes (HEALL), nursing students,
and public health professors as part of interdepartmental learning experiences.
Dr. Paul Rega, MD, designed this exercise that compared the Iserson method of evacuation
(using bedsheets and mattresses) to the Paraslide method. Participants evacuated
from the fourth floor of Collier Building down to ground
level, strategizing on how best to do the evacuation, how many people it takes, how
to carry, pros and cons of each method, etc. From the session, the Iserson method
was found to be the preferred method and the one more likely to be employed in a crisis
situation. These pictures are great examples of the interdisciplinary learning that
takes place among the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Department
of Medicine, and College of Nursing.
