The department offers BS and BA degrees in biology, as well as a concentration in Neuroscience and a pre-professional concentration within the BS degree program. We also offer a degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science), and a BS/MS in Bioinformatics. The courses and research in the department emphasize cell biology, molecular biology, genetics and related areas. The department has five professors who have won The University Outstanding Teacher of the Year award or held the title of Master Teacher of the College of Arts and Sciences. The department has three professors who have been recognized with Sigma Xi and University Outstanding Research Awards, and one Distinguished University Professor. Students gain exposure to cutting edge research both in the classroom and in the laboratories, as participants in undergraduate research projects.
Undergraduate Program Description
Our students address basic biological principles using both plant and animal model systems. Much of the work in our department is focused on answering physiologically-relevant questions by using the latest cell and molecular-based biological approaches. In particular, the research conducted here focuses on the study of human (i.e. cancer, infectious and autoimmune), plant and animal diseases, function and development of the nervous and other organ systems, regulation of signal transduction pathways and problems relevant to crop production. In short, it provides students with a broad spectrum of biologically important knowledge that prepares them for the demanding fields of medicine, biotechnology and microbiology/molecular biology that are so prevalent in today’s technology-based society.
The BS and BA degrees are designed as four year degrees. The curriculum involves biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics as well as college requirements in humanities and social sciences. The department graduates 90-120 students a year. Undergraduates in biosciences have career goals that include attending professional schools (medical, veterinary, dental and osteopathic), graduate schools, medical technology, or immediate entry into the exciting field of biotechnology. Biosciences undergraduates are offered many opportunities including the chance to participate in the biology honors program, conduct undergraduate research, study abroad at the University of Salford or be selected as an undergraduate teaching assistant.
