The Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) degree is a four-year baccalaureate program. The pharmaceutical sciences represent the collective basic sciences that underlie pharmacy. There are four majors under this degree program:
This degree program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers related to the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical science and research, pharmacy administration and sales, the biomedical industry, forensic science, and health care administration. It also prepares students to enter medical school, law school, or graduate studies. In addition, students who earn the BSPS degree are prepared to enter several industries including business, health care administration and the sciences.
The first two years of the BSPS degree are the pre-professional division; the last two years are the professional division. In the first two years, students in the BSPS program will be broadly trained in the arts, humanities and social sciences, although the natural sciences will receive emphasis. The curriculum of the pre-professional division of the College of Pharmacy is similar for the B.S.P.S and Pharm.D. degree programs. In the professional division of the BSPS degree program, advanced courses of study and an internship in each major lead to a unique concentration in the pharmaceutical fields. A total of 132 semester hours are required for graduation from all the BSPS (non-PharmD) degree programs.
Graduates of the BSPS program have a variety of career paths from which to choose, including pre-clinical research and development, clinical and regulatory affairs, product marketing and sales, science writing and editing, investment analysis, forensic science, product testing, and manufacturing. Our graduates are in high demand because of their unique training and preparation.
The College of Pharmacy recommends students successfully complete high school chemistry and biology and have a high school cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a 22 ACT composite (or 1020 combined SAT).
To prepare for college at UT, high school students should have the following coursework:
Acceptance into the BSPS professional division will be based on the student's cumulative GPA and science GPA obtained by the end of the Fall semester of the second year. To apply for the BSPS program, students must achieve both a cumulative GPA and science GPA of at least 2.7. The number of students admitted will be determined by the admissions committee. The students who meet the criteria will be admitted as third-year students into the BSPS program for the following fall semester.
Students from other institutions who wish to apply to the BSPS professional division must have been enrolled in the UT College of Pharmacy for at least 16 quality semester hours (a letter grade must be received in each course) prior to application to the professional division.
