The Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA)
The AMA partners with state medical societies in order to best serve the medical and
legislative needs of each respective region
of the country. In Ohio, we are fortunate enough to have one of the most established
and respected state medical societies in the nation,
the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA). Every medical student, regardless of membership
in the AMA-MSS has a free membership to the
OSMA!
The OSMA is vital to the health and welfare of the citizens of the state of Ohio
as it:
· Represents physicians before the Ohio General Assembly, U.S. Congress, State Medical Board of Ohio, and other state and federal regulatory and administrative bodies.
· Provides products and services for physicians and their staff that create efficiencies to save time and money.
· Assists physicians with problems including government agencies and third-party payers.
· Provides continuing medical education opportunities and staff training.
The OSMA Ohio Delegation to the AMA provides Ohio physicians with a voice in the governance of the AMA. Currently, Ohio is eligible for 13 delegates to the AMA. Additionally, AMA-MSS is afforded regional representation and the Ohio delegation invites any elected Ohio-based regional student representative to participate in the delegation. The Ohio delegation is an active participant in the AMA's House of Delegates which convenes twice a year (Annual Meeting and Interim Meeting) to review and decide on issues important to physicians and their medical practices. The Ohio delegation's participation in the AMA allows physicians the opportunity to participate in a national forum on issues important to the medical profession, most importantly health care reform. The AMA provides a powerful voice in Congress, the courts and federal agencies. The AMA also provides its members with numerous sources of information about physician's practices and the profession. In tandem, the OSMA and the AMA work effectively to represent the interests of Ohio physicians.
