Benefits of AMA Membership
So you have read about AMA and heard about it in the news, but you may still be wondering
about why you should join. First
and foremost we would like to stress that AMA is not like any other extracurricular
group that you may have been part of in the past.
Medical school is the first step of your professional career and AMA is a professional
organization that will help and guide you along your
entire journey.
As a physician-in-training you not only have a responsibility to patients but also
to society. Knowing
every detail about the human body will not suffice; it is important to become involved
in societal, political, and economic issues that affect
you as a medical student and physician, your patients, and the entire healthcare system.
The AMA offers many opportunities to
become involved. There are national, regional, statewide, and local community services
opportunities. At UTCOM, you can become
involved during your first year. In addition to receiving Netter’s Flash Cards and
a weekly subscription to the Journal of the American
Medical Association (JAMA), you will have the opportunity to serve on many subcommittees
and even run for one of six first year representative
positions. Newly formed this year is the Chapter Liaison to Region V, where you would
be the direct line of communication between our
region and the chapter. Below is a list of a few of the many events that AMA was responsible
for in past years at UTCOM:
· Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur campus address
· Basic Disaster Life Support Training for all first year students
· Professionalism presentation during orientation
· Christmas for Kids (over $1000 raised for three area families)
· Helped raise money to send ambulance to Costa Rica
· Succeeding in medical school question/answer series
· Healthcare, economics, and advocacy lecture series
· Covering the Uninsured Week Health Screening
· 5K Race to Cover the Uninsured
· Secondhand Smoke Health Initiative
