AMA Conferences
As a member of our American Medical Association-Medical Student Section, we have the distinct privilege to attend conferences on the state, regional, and national level. These conferences allow us to educate ourselves about some of the pressing issues that the medical profession is facing, as well as the opportunity to meet fellow students and physicians from around the country. These conferences provide countless opportunities that enable each of us to become more involved with medicine on a national level.During the past year, many students had the opportunity to attend our American Medical Association Interim and National Meetings. Each year, the AMA hosts an interim meeting in a different location, last year’s being located in Las Vegas, and this year’s scheduled to take place in Hawaii. The annual meeting is during June and is held in Chicago, the location of the American Medical Association central offices. The setup of each of the meetings is similar in allowing students to become involved in voting on student resolutions that, if approved, continue past the Medical Student Section to the AMA House of Delegates. These resolutions can have enormous impacts, such as resolution to outlaw smoking on aircraft, which was presented years ago by the current president of the AMA when he was a member of the MSS. The conferences offer opportunities to listen to nationally recognized speakers and attend seminars that serve to educate us and prepare us as future physicians. Needless to say, with the cities that these conferences are held in, there is ample time for socializing, and the opportunities that it might provide to meet fellow medical students and physicians from our state, region, and nation.
Each year there are numerous opportunities for our members to attend conferences, from National level Interim and Annual meetings in November and June respectively to Lobby Day in Washington D.C. in February. Each of the opportunities to attend a conference is a worthwhile one for each member to serve as a representative of the University of Toledo College of Medicine, and become involved in an organization that will assuredly have a role in what healthcare comes to mean and how it is practiced in our nation in the future.
