Purpose Officially recognized in spring of 1995.

To promote heath issues specific to Asians and Asian-Americans To promote cultural awareness among fellow students, colleagues, professors, and others in the UT community To be active in the Toledo community by linking with physicians in the area, conducting health screening and promoting heath issues To facilitate linking with other medical school groups both locally and nationally To be a resource for students interested in educational opportunities overseas To provides a forum for social interaction among students in the above goals

Next Health Screening - CANCELLED Saturday, January 17, 2009 (9am to noon)

Health Screening at the Chinese Community Center in Detroit (Madison Heights), MI, partnering with Wayne State. You would have to leave Toledo by 7:30 am. There will only be three spots available for this screening. Services provided will be glucose and total cholestrol checks, blood pressure check, weight and BMI, and health education.

 

APAMSA Region V Conference - "Building Bridges" Saturday, March 14, 2009 Hosted by the University of Toledo APAMSA

"Building Bridges" is the theme of this year's conference. It describes three major areas of focus for the conference. First, we are building bridges between medical professionals and the community to address health disparities. Second, we are building bridges between ethnic groups to form one pan-Asian voice for the advocacy of API health. Third, we are building bridges throughout professional development between undergraduate and medical school, between pre-clinical and clinical years, and finally between medical school and residencies. January 25, 2009: Restaurant Night at a location TBD. Social activity. January 30, 2009: Wayne State Chinese New Year DInner at Golden Harvest Restaurant in Warren, MI at 7pm. The cost will be $15 for an 8-course meal including taxes and tip. January 31, 2009: University of Michigan Asian Health Fair at UM in Ann Arbor, MI. More information will be provided as it is available. February 7, 2009: Medical College of Wisconsin Student Leadership Institute at MCW in Milwaukee, WI. Hao and JP will attend. February 8, 2009: Chinese New Year Festival at UT Student Union, 6:30-9pm. Partnering with the Chinese Association of Greater Toledo (CAGT) to provide health education for attendees, specifically on Hepatitis B. April 2009: Health Screening in Toledo for the Korean and Chinese Communities in Toledo. Location TBD. Partially funded by the minority health month grants May 23-24, 2009: Health Screening at the Asian Festival in Columbus, OH. Partnering with Asian Festival and Ohio State APAMSA to provide health screenings for Asian Festival attendees.

December 13, 2009: Health Screenings at the Chinese Community Center in Detroit (Madison Heights), MI, partnering with Wayne State. December 6, 2008: Ohio Asian American Health Coalition Retreat in Columbus (Dublin), OH. Thirty of community leaders from Toledo, Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati sat down and talked about the coalition, it's mission, opportunities, and barriers that prevent the coalition from moving forward. November 1, 2008: APAMSA National Hepatitis B Meeting in San Francisco, CA. While 5,000 of the world’s leading hepatologists were discussing the recent research developments in liver diseases in the Moscone Convention Center at the annual AASLD Liver Meeting in San Francisco, over 100 medical students from more than 50 different medical schools convened at the Parc 55 nearby for the third annual Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association Hepatitis B Outreach Training. October 17-19, 2008: APAMSA National Conference "Building ONE Community: Cultural Awareness, Competency, and Leadership" in Philadelphia, PA. It will address the imperative that as American society becomes more culturally diverse, physicians are mandated not only to be more aware and sensitive of culturally relevant health issues, but also to be active in breaking down cultural barriers to health care access for their patients. May 24, 2008: Asian American Health/Hep B Fair in Lansing, MI sponsored by Michigan State APAMSA. E-mail John Pham by May 21 if interested in helping. April 26, 2008: APAMSA Regional Conference "Model Minority, Model Health?" at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. The conference will offer a variety of topics exploring healthcare and the role of Asian Pacific Americans in medicine.  All travel costs covered.
