The Safe Places Program invites faculty, staff, graduate assistants, and resident advisors to open their space as a Safe Place for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) individuals and their straight Allies, providing support, a listening ear, and a welcome environment by serving as a resource, an educator, and an advocate for a climate that not only tolerates but embraces diversity. |

Safe Places strives to create a community of support and progressive change emblematic of UT's commitment to the betterment of the human condition, and to celebrating diversity in all its wonderful variety.
The program was started in 2003 by Spectrum, UT's LGBTQ and Ally student organization. As a vital part of the new Office of LGBT Initiatives, it is the University's goal to continue the program's growth through ongoing collaboration with Spectrum and other diversity initiatives on campus. Here's a list of things to look for from the Safe Places Program in the coming months:
LONG TERM GOALS
- Online application/registration process for making your office/residence hall room a Safe Place
- Ongoing Safe Places training programs
- Extensive marketing/recruitment campaign
- Outreach efforts: student organizations, departments and offices
- Development of a Safe Places resource booklet
