Marianne Bigney Scholarship Award in German Studies
The Marianne Bigney fund was established in February 1986 to honor the late Professor Marianne Bigney, who dedicated much of her life to the teaching of students at The University of Toledo. The money in this fund is intended:
- to support incoming first-year students who wish to continue their study of German language, culture, civilization, and literature.
- to support UT undergraduates who wish to continue a course of study in German language, culture, civilization, and literature.
Eligibility Requirements for Entering First-Year Students
Any first-year student entering The University of Toledo who completed a minimum of
three years of German study in high school or abroad and maintained a B average in
those German courses may apply for financial assistance on the basis of merit. Preference
is given to students who have declared a major or minor in German. During their first
year at UT Bigney scholarship recipients must complete two German courses at the intermediate
level or above and earn a B average in these courses.
The maximum amount of the scholarship is $1,000 and is non-renewable; however, the
student may apply for subsequent support through the Bigney Scholarship Award for
UT undergraduates (see below).
Eligibility Requirement for UT Undergraduates
Any undergraduate student at The University of Toledo who will be enrolled in a German
course above the intermediate level during the academic terms of the award year is
eligible to apply for financial assistance on the basis of merit. Preference is given
to students who have declared a major or minor in German. Students must complete
an average of one German course during each term of the award year.
The maximum amount of the scholarship is $1,500 and is renewable for a maximum of
three additional years (for a maximum of four years for continuing UT students). Students
must re-apply each year.
Administration of the Award
An application from an entering first-year student consists of a completed application
form, a copy of the official high school transcript, and a letter of recommendation
from the student's high school German teacher.
An application from a UT undergraduate consists of a completed application form and
a letter of recommendation from a university instructor.
Awards will be made by the selection committee based on the merit of the applicant
and the availability of funds. Members of the committee are Juergen G. Mudrow (Administrator
of the Fund, Professor Emeritus of German), Dr. Ruth Hottell (Chair of the Department
of Foreign Languages), William J. O'Neal (Professor of History), and Friederike Emonds(Co-Administrator
of the Fund, Professor of German).
The deadline for applications is 1 April. Notification of awards will be made no
later than 1 May. All application materials are to be submitted to Dr. Friederike
