Doctoral Program In Educational Technology

The Ph.D. Program in Curriculum and Instruction consists of a minimum of sixty (60) semester credit hours. Students must successfully complete twelve (12) hours of coursework in research tools. They also must successfully complete six (6) hours of Professional Seminars. The major and minor consists of thirty three (33) hours of coursework that might include courses in general Curriculum and Instruction, in their specific program area, and in cognate areas in other departments within or the college of Education or other UT Colleges as approved by the student's program committee. Students must successfully complete nine (9) credit hours of dissertation research to complete their doctoral program. The doctoral program is designed to help students develop rigorous scholarship and expertise in a specific field in order to facilitate their dissertation writing and future professional work.

The doctoral program will consists of 60 semester credit hours as follows:

  • Professional Seminars 6 hours
  • Research Tools 12 hours
  • Interdisciplinary area of concentration 33 hours
  • Dissertation research 9 hours

Please also note that due to the advancement of the Internet, almost 70% of our courses are offered online through (Distance Learning). 

Admission is on a rolling basis with no deadline requirements to submit your application for admission for fall or spring semesters. However, you must submit your application as soon as possible so that the doctoral admission committee has time to review your application before the beginning of your intended semester of admission. All graduate students interested in the doctoral program in C&I must meet the admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies, the Judith Herb College of Education, and the Ph.D. Program in which they wish to study. Application is made to the College of Graduate Studies of The University of Toledo. The admission requirements are as follows:

    1. A complete Application for College of Graduate Studies Admission
    2. A 3.0 cumulative grade point average in all graduate work
    3. An autobiographical sketch that describes why the applicant wishes to pursue the selected doctoral program. This sketch should also include information on previous study, educational experience, professional accomplishments, immediate and future professional goals, a proposed time schedule for completing the degree, and any other information that the applicant believes is relevant for admission into the desired program.
    4. Evidence of research and writing ability. Such evidence may include a master’s thesis, proctored writing sample, a written research report, one or more reprints of publications, a paper presented to a professional society, or similar evidence of competence in this respect. 
    5. Two (2) copies of any and all official graduate transcripts, including credits and degrees earned,
    6. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for applicants seeking admissions to the Educational Technology program. Acceptable GRE scores are:
      • 144 Verbal
      • 144 Quantitative
      • 3.0 Analytical Writing

        International Students (English Proficiency) TOEFL Score:

      • 550 (paper)
      • 213 (computer)
      • 80 (internet)
    1. Three (3) letters of reference describing the applicant’s potential for successfully completing a doctoral program, and
    2. A non-refundable application fee (check or money order payable to The University of Toledo).
