COUNCIL OF GRADUATE STUDENTS (top of page)The Council of Health Science Campus Graduate Students is an organization which meets to discuss issues of interest to graduate students. It serves as the voice of graduate students, provides a forum for airing, discussing, and solving graduate student grievances, and interacts with other schools and universities on graduate students’ behalf. Students with concerns or suggestions for events are encouraged to contact their program representative.
Notices of meetings are distributed in advance. Officers of the Council of Graduate
Students Health Science Programs are elected annually near the
end of each academic year.
The Council of Graduate Students sponsors an annual Graduate Student Research Forum in the spring of the year. This event is organized and run by students. The Graduate Awards breakfast, dinner dances, holiday parties, skating outings, and picnics are some of the other events sponsored by the Council.

COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES COMMUNICATIONS (top of page)The Health Science Campus College of Graduate Studies communicates with students using various methods, however, the student's UTAD (University issued email address) is the most frequently used form of communication. Students are advised to check their University email often as official notices will be sent via email. Information regarding email accounts and other technology resources can be found on the Institutional Technology web site.
Students are issued an UT email account to which correspondence from the College of
Graduate Studies is sent. Students are advised to check this
account on a regular basis.
If you choose, you can forward email messages from your UT account to a personal account you may have with another provider. To do this:
- Click the item in your mailbox that you want to forward
- Click Actions > Forward
- Add the name of the users to whom you want to forward the item > click OK
- Type a message (optional)
- Click Send
The myUT portal is a secure web environment that provides a single access point for all of the information you need to make your UT experience complete. Through this one secure entrance you will find information on academics, services, events and so much more! The information in the portal is organized by pages, referred to as tabs, which are easily navigated. Each tab in the portal has various areas of information, known as channels, which allow you quick access to the information important to you. Student Information SystemUntil the new integrated Banner computer system is implemented after Fall 2007, students may check their grades, personal information, and other information via the Student Information System (SIS). This system can be accessed via the Academic Intranet or from the Student Links page on the UT Monitor site.
Other Methods of Communication
The College of Graduate Studies home page address is www.hsc.utoledo.edu/grad. All information vital to the College can be found on this page or at the addresses linked to this page. During the 2007-2008 academic year, the web site will undergo modifications to merge with the Main Campus Graduate Studies web site. The current site will continue to be available with modifications to links specific to the Health Science Campus.
STUDENT SAFETY/CAMPUS POLICE (top of page)
Atthe University of Toledo the safety and well-being of all students is our primary concern. The University of Toledo’s Police Department is located in Room 007 on the Ground Floor of the Mulford Library Building. The UT PD provides around-the-clock patrol protection. In addition, the UT Campus Police Department officers are certified peace officers in the state of Ohio and have received 524 hours of training. They are fully trained in first aid, traffic and criminal investigation and evidence gathering and are vested with powers of arrest.

Spring 2008 semester, The University of Toledo is launching an emergency mass-communication
system called RED ALERT to reach as quickly as possible
all members of the UT community to provide information and instructions.
To receive RED ALERT messages, students, faculty and staff must register their e-mail and cell phone numbers via the RED ALERT channel on the Home tab of the UT Portal ( http://myut.utoledo.edu/ ). Registrants are strongly encouraged to register to receive instantaneous text messages, however, if you do not have text availability, you can choose to receive a voice message. Due to the logistical requirements of disbursing many voice messages, voicemails may be significantly delayed.
UThas been working to improve emergency communications for some time to have a system in place to help prevent tragedies and provide information for other campus-wide warnings, such as:
- Tornado warnings
- Power or utility failures affecting most or all of the campus
- A missing or abducted child on campus
- Chemical contamination
It is also important to note that some cell phone carriers may send users the opportunity to opt out of receiving RED ALERT messages, similar to a SPAM filter. To continue to receive RED ALERT messages, do not accept your carriers option to block emergency announcements. Also, depending on the cell phone plan, users may incur a small fee for text message usage.
While it is hoped that registrants will rarely see a RED ALERT message, it is important to be able to communicate rapidly and clearly to avoid potential injury or tragedy. RED ALERT is only as powerful as the number of students, faculty and staff it can communicate with. Please visit the myUT portal and register for this important service.
Timely Warnings are communications required by the Clery Act, alerting the student body to an act of violence that has taken place on campus.
However, symbolic of The University of Toledo’s commitment to safety, education and transparency, UTPD takes a broader approach to the requirements of the Clery Act and provides information about incidents adjacent to campus as well.
Please know the safety alerts received from UTPD do not necessarily reflect an increase in crime levels. Rather, we feel a broad and liberal distribution allows students to make more informed choices regarding personal safety and provide an opportunity to share safety information. This site discusses the appropriate responses to a wide range of situations, including fire, evacuation, weather-related emergencies, and other situations that may impact the operations of the University.

Potential criminal activity and other emergencies on the Health Science Campus should be reported directly to the UT Police Department dispatcher. If you wish to report a crime or incident anonymously, you may do so utilizing this form. Please provide as much information as possible in order to assist University Police in addressing your concerns.
NOTE: If you would like to report a suspicious person or circumstance that is happening RIGHT NOW, and requires an immediate police/emergency response, please contact the UT Police dispatcher at 419.530.2600. If you live off-campus, dial 9-1-1.

The department is a participating member in the Northwest Ohio Regional Information System (NORIS). This is a computerized database network linking all local, county and suburban law enforcement agencies to a system whereby information regarding homicide, rape, robbery, burglary and motor vehicle theft is widely distributed among these agencies.

The UT Campus Police Department offers a variety of publications concerning crime prevention. They include Campus Crime and Prevention; Date Rape; The Reality; Rape; Safe and Sober Drinking Guide; Carjacking: Preventing the Crime. There also are several videotapes available for loan to any interested students.
All students of the University of Toledo Health Science Campus must obtain UT identification badges. These I.D. badges can be obtained at the Health Science Campus Police Department on the ground floor of the Mulford Library Building. Students are reminded that when on campus, I.D. badges must be in their possession and worn at waist level or above.
UTHealth Science Campus is presently implementing card access throughout the campus. This system works in conjunction with the I.D. badge, and if you are so designated, will allow access to certain areas. Currently, there are several card access systems on campus to name a few: the front doors to the Collier Building, the student game room, the computer room in the Health Education Building, and the concourse doors between the Health Education Building and Block Health Science Building.

Alcohol and Drugs (top of page)
The consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited except at UT-sponsored and sanctioned events. The consumption of alcoholic beverages at these events is restricted to the immediate area of the event and adjacent grounds. If students are found consuming alcoholic beverages elsewhere, the beverages are confiscated at the scene and disposed of by UT Police personnel in an appropriate manner. Possible criminal charges could be brought forth under the applicable city or state statutes.
The possession, distribution and/or consumption of illegal drugs is prohibited on the UT campus. Persons on campus who are discovered to be in possession of illegal drugs can be charged criminally under the applicable state or federal statutes, and also may be charged administratively under the rules of UT. Illegal drugs discovered on campus are turned over to the Toledo Police Department Crime Lab to be disposed of/destroyed in accordance with its policies. In addition, UT complies with all provisions of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Act of 1989. Copies of these publications are available from the Department of Human Resources.
Personal Safety/Sexual Assault Prevention
AtUT Health Science Campus procedures have been established to prevent the occurrence of personal and sexual assault. It is important that students are aware of information regarding sexual assault and steps UT is taking to minimize the chance that it will occur on the campus or grounds.
Should you ever become the victim of a sexual assault on the property of UT, take the following steps immediately:
- Call the UT Health Science Campus Police Department at emergency extension 77 or extension 3770 to report the assault.
- DO NOT wash, bathe or remove any article of clothing that was worn during the assault.
- Ask an UT Health Science Campus Police officer to notify your family or a friend of the assault.
- Go to the Emergency Department for treatment.
UTPolice officers are trained to watch campus grounds and surrounding areas for potential security hazards such as inadequate lighting due to burned-out bulbs; high shrubs that can conceal an intruder or robber and other deficiencies that pose a threat to students. Department personnel are assisted in this endeavor by Facilities Maintenance, Grounds, and Liability Control personnel. All persons are encouraged to report any problems they feel pose a danger to their personal safety and well-being.
The UT PD has a Crime Crunchers Hotline (x4445) that will give rewards for information leading to the conviction of a crime on the Health Science Campus.
Other Aid to Students
The Police Department will assist students with motorist assists such as unlocks, jump starts, out-of-gas. The UT PD can fingerprint (at no charge) for anyone affiliated with UT for any reason. The UT PD also houses the Lost and Found Department.
All UT students must register their cars to park on campus. Students can fill out the motor vehicle registration forms at the Parking & Traffic Office located next to the UT PD offices. Students are permitted to park in lots #3 and #4. Students also may park in lot #2 after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, and anytime during the weekends. If you receive a ticket, you have the right to appeal to the Parking Commission.
