Karl E. Strauss is a 2006 graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law, where he graduated with honors and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. He earned his undergraduate B.A. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (“UMBC”) in 2003. Karl received several academic honors at UMBC and was a four-year Division I scholarship swimmer. In his senior year, he was elected as co-captain of UMBC’s Men’s Swim Team, and received both a UMBC Political Science Outstanding Scholarly Leader award and the Matt Skalsky Outstanding UMBC Scholar Athlete award.

Karl has over eleven years of legal experience, including time in private practice and as in-house counsel to Ohio’s largest healthcare system. Karl now applies his expertise, experience, and skill as a Compliance Officer at ProMedica in several key areas, including for its metro hospitals, specialty institutes, academics, research, and risk. ProMedica is a dynamic and innovative health system here in Toledo and is one of the Forbes 2017 America’s Best Large Employers. As an adjunct professor at the College of Law, Karl teaches courses revolving around compliance, ethics, and related practical skills. So his background blends well with the curriculum in his skills-based courses.

Karl has been active nationally and locally throughout his career. In 2015, he presented at the American Health Lawyers Association Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., where he provided insight to attendees on ways to effectively monitor various compliance issues within physician practices. In Toledo, Karl has been a member of the ABLE/LAWO Emerging Leaders Council and the Steering Committee for this region’s Healthcare Heroes awards. For his efforts in the community, Karl has received his district’s Ohio State Bar Association Community Service Award for Attorneys under 40; and was recognized by UT Law as its 2013 Outstanding New Exemplar. Karl currently serves on the College of Law’s Board of Governors.

In addition to his professional activities, Karl is an avid photographer, swimmer, and tri-athlete; and is the head coach of the St. Francis de Sales high school water polo team.
