Academic Coaching

The Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) provides academic coaching to all health science programs. Students may seek academic coaching for various reasons. The goal of the AEC is to support all students as they adapt to the rigors of their curriculum. The AEC assists students with study skills, time management skills, USMLE test prep, life skills, and much more. Any current student may drop in or make an appointment with the Learning Specialist. No referrals are needed.

Learning Specialist

Our Learning Specialist is available to advise students individually or in small groups on issues related to academic strategies. The specialist may present special workshops throughout the year on topics such as academic planning and time management. The Learning Specialist will monitor and review academic records and serve as a liaison with student affairs.

Study Strategies

The Learning Specialist will assist students in preparing for subject and comprehensive exams. The amount of material and pace of curriculum can present many challenges for medical students. Understanding how you personally learn and then practicing effective study strategies are important aspects of gaining success in medical school. Below is a link to the VARK Learning Styles Inventory.

The link below will help with figuring out your learning style preferences. The questionnaire only takes about 5 minutes and is overall very accurate.

You can choose more than one option for each question.

Once you learn about your learning style preference(s), click the link below (from University of Florida College of Medicine – created by medical students) to find suggestions on how to study in medical school based on your learning style(s).

The goal is to create something like this for UToledo in the future.

Additionally, below is a link to a Google Sheet to start compiling everyone’s results. This way you will have access to other UToledo medical students with similar learning styles.

Once you get your results, please add your information into this Google Sheet if you wish: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KrBODVOs_t2GQSzY18K4lNO7HjGYMf1e1gRInRtoSfk/edit?usp=sharing

USMLE Preparation

The Learning Specialist will coach students for successful completion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1. The academic counselor will also facilitate USMLE Step 1 workshops.
