This section is staffed 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Off hours are covered by an on-call team for emergencies. Nuclear Medicine is located on the third floor of the Hospital.
This modality images the human body by injecting radiopharmaceuticals (isotopes) typically into the patient's vein. The radiation emitting from the patient is then "imaged" utilizing a computer assisted gamma camera or SPECT scanner.
Nuclear Medicine images are best at determining function or flow of organs/systems. Typical exams are Bone scans (for metastatic disease), lung scans, liver scans, etc.
This modality routinely utilizes SPECT scanning and PET coincidence detection imaging techniques to optimize studies to help
surgeons better treat
cancer and to obviate the need for invasive surgery in some cases.
