UT President - Dr. Sharon L. Gaber

Welcome Faculty, Staff and Students

August 22, 2017

Welcome to fall semester! We’ve accomplished so much together over the past year at The University of Toledo, and I want to thank you for your continued support. Each of you plays a vital role in our ongoing success.

In June, our Board of Trustees approved a five-year strategic plan, which focuses our priorities as we approach UT’s 150th anniversary in 2022. Next, our faculty and staff will develop strategies for their own UT College or division to align with this plan.

In addition to the gains we’ve made in both enrollment and fundraising, I’m proud to tell you that research also has increased … for the first time in the past five years! We continue expanding opportunities for our students, and research is enabling our faculty and students to be published in national publications.

For the 2017-18 academic year, we’re sharpening our focus on students – implementing a 15-week semester to allow more flexibility to participate in learning opportunities outside the classroom, such as studying abroad or completing an internship; requiring second-year students to live on campus, which should increase student engagement and the vibrancy on Main Campus; opening new, popular restaurants in Thompson Student Union and upgrading several of our student dining halls … among many other activities.

Our football team recently was voted to finish first in the MAC’s West Division by the league’s media contingent. And special recognition goes to all of our student-athletes, who broke a school record in spring with a combined GPA of 3.27!

While unsettling events have taken place on college campuses and elsewhere across the world, I ask that you please stay vigilant and make choices to be safe. Moreover, if you ever need assistance academically, personally or professionally, be sure to use the many UT resources available to you. We’re here to help!

Thank you for being part of Rocket Nation … and let’s have a fantastic fall semester.

Go Rockets!

Sharon L. Gaber, Ph.D.
