Recreational Services


RocketEx group exercise classes are held at the Student Recreation Center and the Morse Fitness Center. RocketEx classes are open to all members and community members 18 and older. SRC classes are held in the Fitness Studio, Willow Room, Cycling Room, and TRX area. Morse Center classes are held in the facilities only Fitness Studio. We are sure to have a class that fits you and your fitness goals! 


Melissa Ahrens

Melissa is a Boot Camp instructor at Morse Center. She is a certified group fitness instructor and has been teaching classes since 2006, including Boot Camp and Hip Hop Dance. She has a Master’s in Public Health in Health Behavior Health Education from the University of Michigan where she taught Boot Camp classes for 6 years for their MHealthy Program.  She is an Infection Preventionist at University of Toledo Medical Center fulltime and teaches in her spare time. Her main passion is spending time with her new daughter and husband.  Her personal interests include exercising, teaching fitness to others, dancing, and camping. Her motto is ‘If you think prevention is too much trouble, try disease’. She feels that excuses don’t burn calories and that staying fit and healthy can be a way of life if given the proper tools. She would love to see you in her Boot Camp Class!

Waverley Hawkins: (aka Shakey Shakey)

Is a native of Toledo, Ohio and proud member of the dance community for over six years. As an instructor for Urban Line Dancing and Water Line Dancing, she has taught classes to men and women from adolescents to seniors for over three years. She also remains involved in Ballroom Dancing, Latin Hustle, Stepping, Salsa, and Bop in her own time. Expanding her creativity in 2015, Waverley collaborated with local DJ Moni "MPress" Features creating her own urban line dance to a "Beast Mode" mini mix. Most recently obtaining her Cardio Drumming Certification in September of 2016.

Hannah Johnson:

Is a senior majoring in Kinesiology. She is planning to attend graduate school for physical therapy. For the past year, she has been involved in a group fitness instructor’s program. She also teaches Hard Core Abs and Total Body Tone. Her passions are music, arts, and fitness and health. Hannah looks forward to sharing new experiences with the UT rec community!

Suzanne Lee:

Is a Public and Community Psychiatry Project Coordinator, in the Psychiatry Department of The University of Toledo. She is pursuing her Master of Public Health.  Sue also is a certified yoga instructor through Yoga Fit Systems.  She enjoys instructing lunchtime, gentle flow yoga class at the Morse Center, through the initiative brought forth by the Student Wellness Committee and the Community Health for the Underserved Committee, funded by the UT MEDTAPP HCA Grant.  

Andrea Masters

Andrea is the Assistant Director of Rocket Wellness. Andrea has held several positions in the corporate fitness and wellness field over the years. She is trained in Wellcoaches©, indoor cycling, Pilates, Piyo, TRX, and smoking cessation. As a certified Personal Trainer, she looks forward helping individuals achieve overall wellness through exercise.

Holly Moungie:

Is a dual certified Spinning instructor who is passionate and excited for the opportunity to bring her enthusiasm and unique teaching style to the University of Toledo Rec Center.

John Napp

John is an Associate Professor and Engineering Librarian who enjoys indoor and outdoor cycling. He likes to make his weekly Rocket Cycle classes enjoyable yet challenging for all fitness levels. He also enjoys road and mountain biking. Recently he began running and has participated in some 5K events.

Nikki Pavlik: 

Is a spin instructor here at the student Recreation Center. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toledo and is now an account manager. Nikki’s love for indoor cycling started right here at the university when she and her friend Amanda would wake up every morning to make the 6:15 am spin class. She has been cycling religiously ever since. Now teaching here at the Rec center, she believes her cycling career has come full circle- being that she is able to teach at the place where her love for the sport started. Nikki grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and LOVES all Cleveland sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes. She enjoys spending time with her best friends who live all over the Midwest, her husband, Matt and her yellow lab, Stella!

Vickie Riddick:

Is the Director of UT Rocket Wellness. Vicki loves teaching group exercise classes at the Morse Center.  Her goal is to motivate her classes with high energy and functional fitness.  Vicki is a certified group exercise instructor as well as personal trainer, specializing in Piyo, Step, Cardio Drumming, TRX and functional fitness for all. Vicki has a true passion for fitness and wellness, which is reflected in her infectious teaching style.

Shelly Ridner:

Is the GA of Fitness and Wellness for the Office of Recreational Services here at the University of Toledo’s Recreational Center. She has been a group fitness instructor and a personal trainer since 1999 with multiple national certifications. Her passion is to empower and inspire people to move, have fun, and share her appreciation of health and fitness. She has a profound ability to motivate, support, and interact with people on a personal level to help guide them towards a healthy lifestyle and improved quality of life. “Fitness is fun and the benefits are endless, lets move!”

Jocelyn Szymanski:  

Is the Wellness Coordinator for The University of Toledo’s employee wellness program “Healthy U”. She received her Master's degree in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Promotion and Education from The University of Toledo. She has her Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Counseling, also from UT. Jocelyn loves to research the latest developments in health and fitness. She is a certified group exercise instructor and trained in yoga and indoor cycling, all through AFAA. She holds certifications to teach TRX and PiYo. Jocelyn loves making workouts as fun and enjoyable as possible; her specific interests include golfing, running, and being with her friends, family and pets. 

Marisa Tomei

Marisa is a PiYo and Six Pack Attack instructor here at the Student Recreation Center (her favorite place to work.) She is very passionate about health and fitness and loves to try out as many new workouts as possible in and outside her classes. She is in her second year of the doctorate of physical therapy program here at UT. Her hobbies include working out (duhh), cooking, hiking and biking, being involved on campus and spending time with family and friends. She hopes to share her passions with each and every one of you.

Nikki Tylka is a Spin Instructor at the Student Recreation Center and the St. James Club in Toledo, Ohio.  She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toledo, and is now an Account Manager at Card Advertising, Inc. Nikki’s love for indoor cycling started right here at the University of Toledo.  When she was a senior at UT, she and her friend Amanda would wake up every morning to make the 6:15 a.m. spin class.  She has been cycling religiously ever since then.  Now that she is teaching at the recreation center, she believes that her cycling career has come full circle – being that she gets to teach at the place where her love for the sport started.  Nikki grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and LOVES all Cleveland sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes.  She loves spending her free time with her best friends who live all over the Midwest, her husband, Matt and her yellow lab, Stella!


Aqua Zumba®: This is the aqua fitness program everyone has been waiting for! Aqua Zumba® is a safe, effective and challenging water-based workout set to international dance rhythms that integrates the Zumba® formula and philosophy into traditional aqua fitness.

Athletic Conditioning: Athletic Conditioning combines strength training, core and cardio, circuits, plyometric movements and speed, and agility drills to prove a total body workout! This class is designed to challenge you on individual basis and also as a group in a “team” like atmosphere. Take Athletic Conditioning to reach your maximum physical capacity in strength, speed, agility, and fitness.

BootcampBootcamp incorporates cardio drills, and multiple muscle toning movements using free weights and body weight. This workout is sure to take your fitness and endurance to the next level. The class format is always changing and will be sure to push you!

Gentle Flow Yoga:  Appropriate for all levels, combining, mind, body and breath.  Leave feeling refreshed and relaxed, ready to start your week ahead.

Pilates: A combination of muscular strength combinations and endurance exercises that increases flexibility, body alignment, and balance. Prepare to engage your core and improve your stamina with exercises that are appropriate for all levels.

PiYo: A blend of strength moves taken from pilates and yoga principles. It includes modifications for the group exercise environment, yet offers exercise progressions to challenge all levels of participants.

Power Yoga: A vigorous vinyasa class that incorporates many of the traditional poses from Ashtanga Yoga. It builds internal heat, increases stamina, develops both strength and flexibility, and helps to reduce stress. Each sequence is individually designed by the instructor to focus on a particular theme, and classes move through four platforms: sun salutations, standing and balancing poses, back strengtheners and bends, and floor exercises such as abdominal strengtheners, hip openers, seated bends, and twists. Students learn to synchronize their breath with their movements and to use asana (poses) as a way to build their concentration and awareness of the self. The practice concludes with meditation to achieve clarity and calm.

Rocket Cycle: This class simulates outdoor cycling on a specially designed stationary bike. It is an effective way to burn fat, build energy, and reduce stress. A professional, certified instructor guides the class along the way.

Rocket Drumming: A workout for the entire body as well as a powerful tool for stress reduction and mental balance. Combining drumming with movement, you’ll enjoy a full hour of exhilarating music and beats.  Leave Cardio drumming feeling like a rockstar!

Serious Circuits: Serious circuits combines both body weight and free weight workouts to maximize cardio, strength, and body toning! Utilizing circuit style rotations through new and challenging workouts that are sure to boost performance and results. This class format is always changing to keep things interesting!

Six Pack Attack: A 15 minute class dedicated to sculpt and define your mid sectiom, using a variety of different ab exercises as well as a use of light weight that will help you burn that belly fat, strengthen your core and lower back, and gain that “sick pack you have always wanted.

Steps and Ladders: Steps and Ladders is a cardio bodyweight strength training class that uses speed ladders and aerobic steps to work on the fundamentals of footwork, agility and leg conditioning. This class balances both cardio and total body stability, along with improving balance and leg/hip strength. 

Thrive in 45: Recognize the power of your own body in "Thrive in 45" as you progress through a continuous 45 minutes of cardio, core, strength and agility using no extra equipment. This fun and challenging class will test your fitness limits and show you how to manipulate your body weight for a great overall workout. 

Trackside Fitness: Meet by the track and participate in a fun and ever-changing workout!  This class will vary from cardio drills, to body weight exercises and everything in between.

Turbo Kick LIVE: combines traditional kickboxing moves with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for an unbelievable calorie burn.

Total Body Conditioning: Total Body Conditioning is an energetic full-body workout that includes strength, cardio and core in one complete workout.

Urban Line Dancing: Yea buddy! Don't be "The Purse Watcher" when you go out! Get ready to hit the dance floor at your next party/event! Learn old and new line dances step by step so you will be the life of the party on the dance floor! Line dancing is also another way to get a great cardio work out in and have a blast doing it! Burn calories and not even know it because you're to busy having fun learning great line dances and listening to great music that moves your body. I'll see you on the dance floor!!

WERQ®: WERQ® is the fiercely fun dance fitness workout class based on pop, rock, and hip-hop music taught by Certified Fitness Professionals.  The signature WERQ® warmup previews the dance steps used in class and the signature WERQ™ cooldown includes balance and yoga inspired poses.  Are you ready to WERQ®?

Yoga: Challenge and connect your mind and body with yoga aanas, vinyasas, conscious breathing, stretching, and relaxation techniques. Yoga is an individual practice where all judgment, competition, and expectations are let go. The focus is internal, connecting breath, body and mind.

Zumba®: This class will blow you away! This class fuses international music and dance in an easy to follow workout.
