Insurance Policy Summaries

Professional Liability

Insurance Carrier:

  • The University of Toledo Medical Assurance Company, SPC 

Policy Limits:

  • $1,000,000 Each Claim/$3,000,000 Aggregate Limit - Primary

Deductible:

  • $0. 

Coverage Provided:

  • Legal defense and settlement amounts/expenses arising from claims brought against the University and its healthcare employees, students and residents, based on injury to any person arising out of any negligent act, error, or omission in the rendering of healthcare services. Coverage applies to University healthcare students and residents in academically approved clinical experiences or rotations.

Automobile Liability

Insurance Carrier:

  • Inter-University Council - Insurance Consortium (IUC-IC) Casualty Pool;
  • See Casualty Excess Liability Chart below for additional coverage.

Policy Limits:

  • $1,000,000 Combined Single Limit (CSL), Bodily Injury (BI), and Property Damage (PD) per Accident/Loss;
  • $2,500 Medical Payments per Person, per Accident/Loss;
  • $1,000,000 CSL BI/PD Hired and Non-Owned per Accident/Loss. 

Deductible:

  • $100,000 per Occurrence. 

Coverage Provided:

  • Legal defense costs and settlements for bodily injury and/or property damage claims brought against the University and its employees from the operation of motor vehicles owned, leased, rented, or otherwise controlled by, or on the behalf of, The University of Toledo. For employees using personal vehicles for official business, this policy provides coverage excess to the employee's personal liability limits.   It is encouraged that the insurance coverage be obtained from rental agencies.  The University has a contract with Enterprise in which insurance is included in the rental fee.  Go to the Purchasing Department website for information on the Enterprise Car Rental Program.

Foreign Liability

Insurance Carrier:

  • Insurance Company of the State of Pennsylvania.

Policy Limits:

             Foreign General Liability:

  • $1,000,000 Each Occurrence; 
  • $2,000,000 General Aggregate; 
  • $10,000 Medical Expense. 

             Foreign Auto Liability (Hired/Non-owned Vehicles):

  • $1,000,000 Combined Single Limit Each Occurrence;
  • $10,000 Medical Expense.

             Foreign Travel Accident and Sickness:

  • $25,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment (Principal Sum);
  • $10,000 Accidental & Sickness Medical Expenses ($250 deductible);
  • $100,000 Emergency Medical Evacuation;
  • $100,000 Emergency Family Travel Each Insured ($100,000 policy limit);
  • $25,000 Repatriations of Remains Each Insured ($100,000 policy limit).

Coverage Provided:

  • Legal defense costs and settlement amounts for liability claims arising from suits brought against the University for acts occurring outside the United States. Applies to employees while traveling abroad, (excluding certain foreign countries where a United States of America Department of State ban is in effect), as part of University sponsored and approved foreign teaching tours, foreign study tours or programs, and field trips.

General Liability

Insurance Carrier:

Policy Limits:

  • $1,000,000 Each Occurrence Bodily Injury and Property Damage;
  • $1,000,000 General Aggregate Limit;
  • See Casualty Excess Liability Chart above for additional coverage.

Deductible:

  • $100,000 per Occurrence.

Coverage Provided:

  • Legal defense and settlement costs for bodily injury or property damage liability claims arising from University premises and/or University operations. Covered under this program are all University officers, employees, authorized volunteers and students acting within the course and scope of their duties as such. 

Worker's Compensation

Insurance Carrier:

  • The State of Ohio. 

Policy Limits:

  • Statutory.

Deductible:

  • $0.

Coverage Provided:

  • The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation insures the University for all medical and wage compensation losses as the result of employee work-related injury or disease claims.  Health Management Solutions, a Bureau certified Managed Care Organization (MCO), authorizes injured employees' medical treatment.  The Bureau of Workers' Compensation allows or disallows claims and issues payment for any lost time wages.
