Donor Scholarships
The College of Law Scholarship Committee awards numerous donor scholarships to Toledo Law students based on information in the upper-level scholarship application. Awards vary in amount and duration. Information is subject to change.
Alan S. Konop Scholarship Fund
Scholarship awarded to part-time students with financial need in the College of Law.
Anthony G. Pizza Scholarship Fund
Friends of Tony Pizza have set up this scholarship fund in honor of his retirement.
Recipients must be first-year students with demonstrated promise based on undergraduate
performance.
Barbara Hall-Foley Black Law Scholarship
Established in 1997. Income from this scholarship will be used to help members of
the Black Law Students Association buy books. Recipients will be chosen based upon
need.
Burton A. Maddock Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1983 by the estate of Burton A. Maddock. Awarded to full-time or part-time
students who are maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA.
C. W. Peckinpaugh Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1979 by Mrs. Charles Peckinpaugh Jr. in memory of her husband, a Toledo-area
attorney. This fund provides scholarships to law students from Lucas or Wood Counties.
Recipients must demonstrate high academic achievement and significant financial need.
C.V. Wolfe Law Scholarship
Established in 1993 by the family in memory of Cletus V. Wolfe, a former UToledo professor.
Recipients, one of whom must be a minority student, must have financial need, meet
academic standards and be a graduate of an Ohio high school.
Chris Tucker Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1994 by students of the Class of '94 in memory of their classmate,
Chris Tucker. Assistance will be awarded to full-time students with demonstrated financial
need and merit.
Clarence J. Applegate Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1984 by Celia M. Applegate in memory of her husband Clarence (Law 1920),
a Toledo attorney. Priority is given to law students with financial need who are enrolled
in the part-time evening division with at least a 2.5 GPA. Scholarship is to be used
toward tuition, fees and books.
Claudia Dattilo Fund
Established in 2000 by Thomas Dattilo. Income from this scholarship assists law students
with financial need.
College of Law LGBTQ Advocacy Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to students enrolled in the College of Law who, despite obstacles,
have demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBTQ rights after graduation.
Dennis Jackson Scholarship
Established in 1997 to assist full-time students who are from eastern Ohio and specifically,
when practical, Cuyahoga or Tuscarawas counties.
Donato & Josephine Iorio Scholarship
Established in 1994. Awarded to students based on need.
Dr. Frederick Simonelli Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to students in the College of Law.
Scholarship awarded to full-time second- or third-year law students. They will be chosen based upon financial need and must have a GPA of at least 2.4 up to 3.2. Preference will be given to students pursuing an interest in labor/employment law.
Eddie M. Cole Minority Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to minority law students.
Frank T. Pizza Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 2004. Recipients will be a student in the College of Law. Student must
have a 2.5 GPA or higher. Recipients must either have a record of past community service,
including volunteer activities in connection with campaigns to support candidates
for public elective service, or a record of involvement with intramural or interscholastic
athletic activities. Preference may be given to candidates whose records show both
community service and athletic involvement.
Gary L. Wamer Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a student who exemplifies integrity and shows promise of doing
so in their professional career. Financial need should be considered.
Helen Hatcher Law Student Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to students enrolled in College of Law.
Honorable Frank Witt Wiley Scholarship Fund
Established in 1980 by the estate of George Stundon, a retired employee of the Sun
Oil Co., in memory of Judge Frank Witt Wiley. Income from this fund provides scholarships
to law students who have graduated from high schools in counties whose appellate court
is the Sixth District Court of Appeals of Ohio, who maintained a GPA not less than
2.2 nor more than 3.2.
Honorable Nicholas Walinski Scholarship
Established in 1993 by the College of Law in memory of the Honorable Nicholas J. Walinski
(Law 1952) who, at the time of his death, was a senior judge on the United States
District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Assistance is provided to law students
based on academic achievement.
Honorable Thaddeus N. Walinski Scholarship
Established in memory of the Honorable Thaddeus N. Walinski, who, during his career,
served as a Toledo Municipal Court Judge and Vice-Mayor of the City of Toledo. Assistance
is given to the editor-in-chief of The University of Toledo Law Review.
Irene and Ted Wisniewski Law Scholarship
Scholarship for law students with preference given to students with previous military
experience. Preference also given to law students with an interest in practicing in
the state of Arizona. Based on financial need.
J. Thomas Lenga Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2002. Recipients must be first-year student at the College of Law.
Candidate must have a 2.8 GPA or higher. The scholarship is based on financial need
and merit.
Jane McQuade Interview Suit and Expenses Fund
Scholarship awarded to second-, third- and fourth-year students at the College of
Law. To be used to assist with the purchase of a tailored suit and related accessories.
Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.7.
Joe A. Simons Scholarship Fund
Scholarship awarded to a student in the College of Law who has demonstrated an interest
in labor and employment law. Preference will go to a student with a human resources
undergraduate degree or internship.
John W. Stoepler Scholarship Fund
Established in 1990 by various donors in honor of John W. Stoepler (Law 1961), dean
of the College of Law from 1983 to 1990 and former interim president and vice president
of University relations. Income from this fund provides financial assistance to students
based on financial need or academic merit.
Joseph G. Gluck Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a student attending law school who has financial need. Students
must have a current FAFSA on file.
Judge Francis C. and Jane Restivo Scholarship Fund
Scholarship awarded to part-time, first-year law students who are Ohio residents.
Judge Frank and Florence Kloeb Scholarship
Established in 1997. Scholarships for law students with financial need.
Judge Geraldine Macelwane Memorial Law Scholarship
Established in 1998, this scholarship is awarded to female law students.
Judge J. Ronald Bowman Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to academically meritorious law student.
Judge Joseph A. Flores Memorial Scholarship Fund
Scholarship awarded to Latino/Hispanic, with preference given to those of Mexican-American
descent. Must be U.S. citizens. Must be UToledo Law students with a GPA of 2.5 or
higher. Full-time students will be given preference. May be in any year of study.
Scholarship is based on financial need. Applicants may be required to write an essay.
Judge Melvin Resnick Law School Fund
Established in 2008 and awarded to assist students going into pro bono law or with
financial need.
Judge Myron and Nicole Duhart Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to students in the College of Law. Preference will be given to
applicants who have sickle-cell anemia, or whose family member has sickle-cell anemia.
Judge Roger R. Weiher Law Scholarship
Scholarship for law students with preference given to evening students.
Kenneth P. Hicks Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to College of Law students with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Key Bank/Willis Trust Scholarship Fund
Established in 1994 by Key Bank through a trust created in 1946 by the late Philip
Willis, owner of Willis Greenhouse. Income from this fund provides scholarships to
law students who graduated from a Toledo area high school, meet academic standards,
and demonstrate financial need.
Law Alumni Scholarship
Established in 1961 by various donors through the Law Alumni Association. Income from
this scholarship assists College of Law students.
Leslie Henry Law Scholarship
Established in 1989 by the late Flora-Belle Henry in memory of her husband. Awarded
to law students based on merit and financial need.
Matt and Bertha Kolb Scholarship Fund
Scholarship awarded to law students who demonstrate academic merit.
Matthew Wargo Scholarship
Established in 1998. Recipient must be an entering or continuing law student at UToledo.
The law student must be full or part-time, with an undergraduate degree from Ohio
University. The student must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or higher, and
must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA throughout law school. Scholarship is based on need.
Michael F. Jilek, Sr. Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to second- or third-year law students with a GPA of 2.0 to 2.99.
Preference given to students who have expressed interest in plaintiff civil trial
practice.
Richard G. LaValley Sr. Fund
Scholarship awarded to students enrolled in the College of Law.
Rightmyer-McLean Law Scholarship
Established in 1988 by attorneys Kevin McLean and Lee Rightmyer (Law 1982). Income
from this fund provides assistance to first year law students based on scholastic
achievement, with financial need also a consideration.
Robert J. W. Meffley Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1981 by the late Louise Meffley (A/S '23) in memory of her husband
Robert (A/S '23, MA '24), a Toledo attorney. Income from this fund provides scholarships
to law students based on academic achievement.
Robert W. Pike Law Scholarship
Established in 2004. Scholarships for law students at the discretion of the Scholarship
Committee.
Roger E. and Paula M. Murray Scholarship
Established in 2007. Recipients must be first or second year law students with a 3.25
GPA or higher. The scholarship is merit based.
Shindler, Neff, Holmes and Schlageter Law Student Scholarship
Established in 1999. Full-time students entering their third year or part-time students
entering their fourth year. Must be in top ten percent of the class and show consistent
high academic achievement. Preference will be given to students participating in law
review, moot court or other similar academic activities at the College of Law.
The Jermann Scholarship
Established in 2015 by Edmond L. Jermann. The Jermann Scholarship is to be used to
aid students of The University of Toledo College of Law with financial need who have
successfully completed at least one-half of the requirements for a law degree. College
of Law GPA is considered in awarding the Jermann Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship
is to help those students who have demonstrated competence and ability to successfully
complete their law school education.
Thomas Zachman Fund
Scholarship awarded to students enrolled in the College of Law. Preference will be
given to students with financial need.
Vincent L. Barker, Jr. Scholarship Fund
Scholarship awarded to second-, third-, or fourth-year law students who have declared
an interest in intellectual property law.
Wagoner & Steinberg, Ltd. Scholarship for Law Students
Scholarship may be used for tuition or books for College of Law students who have
demonstrated high academic achievement. Recipients may be evening students.
William J. McDaniels Law Scholarship
Established in 1983 by the estate of Mrs. Kathryn S. McDaniels in memory of her husband
William J. McDaniels. Awarded to law students who show financial need and maintain
at least a 3.0 GPA.
William N. Thomas Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1988 by Ruth R. Thomas in memory of her husband William (Ed '36, Law
'51), a longtime practicing attorney in the Toledo area and past president of the
Toledo Board of Education. Income from the fund is awarded to entering law students
who are African American, have a superior academic record and demonstrate need.
