Health Science Students Guidelines

Last Updated May 29, 2020 at 10:30 a.m.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, The University of Toledo is closely monitoring the latest developments. With guidance and input from our UToledo infectious disease experts and local, state and federal public health officials, we are making well-informed, evidence-based decisions on how best to carry out our educational mission safeguarding our faculty, staff, students and community at large.

What is the University doing about clinical rotations?

On March 26, 2020, we announced the suspension of all direct contact clinical experiences for our health science students through the rest of this spring semester.

On May 29, 2020, we announced as part of Phase One that clinical labs and rotations associated with the College of Health and Human Services, College of Nursing, and College of Medicine and Life Sciences will open on June 22, 2020.

Individual colleges and programs will continue to keep students informed as more information becomes available.

Is Mulford Library open?

No. Mulford Library is closed as of March 18, and campus access for students is restricted. During this time, access to electronic collections will continue to be available, and our chat, phone, and email reference services will remain available to students, faculty, residents and staff members daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, other services such as book delivery by Interlibrary Loan are closed. Finally, all overdue books fines will be waived during this period of closure.

Need physical books from Mulford or Carlson Libraries? Curbside pickup is available for students, faculty, and staff, as of May 18, 2020.

Can I come to campus? Are labs still open?

Please, do not come to campus. To help prevent the spread of disease, access to many facilities on the Health Science Campus is restricted to ONLY essential research personnel

On June 3, 2020, laboratory directors will begin to prepare labs. Research will resume on campus on June 8, 2020.  The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs has provided additional guidance on the approval process for return.

Updated May 18:

Clinical Curriculum

Third year
In an effort to preserve previously chosen tracks and the elective option, the M3 year has been redesigned with the goal of preserving all required clerkship disciplines but reducing each clerkship by 20%.  IM and Surgery will be 8 weeks; FM, Neurology, ObGyn, Peds, Psych will be 4 weeks.  Before returning to the clinical learning environment on June 22, students will be taking a four-week (5/18-6/12) Preparation for Clerkship (P4C) course that will provide an opportunity for each clerkship to present foundational material.  These multidisciplinary panel discussions are designed to encourage and further the development of clinical reasoning skills.  A modified Bridge course (6/15-19) will follow P4C. Both courses will include COVID-19 education.

Fourth year
The M4 year will officially start on May 18 with Advanced Clinical Care; this early start date ensures timely distribution of loans.  Block 10 will begin on June 8 and will be shortened to 4 weeks, the first two weeks of which will be delivered remotely using an online platform (real time and asynchronous learning).  With an anticipate return to the clinical learning environment on June 22, the last 2 weeks of block 10 will be completed real time.  The fourth-year electives will begin July 6.
