Biographical Sketch

William U. McDonald was born on June 10, 1927 in Meridian, Mississippi. He attended the University of Alabama where he received his Bachelors of Arts degree in 1947 and his Masters of Arts degree in 1949.  From there, he taught English at Auburn University until 1952.  He continued his education Northwestern University and received his Ph.D. there in 1956.  McDonald began teaching English at the University of Toledo in 1955.  In 1961 he became an Associate Professor in English at UT and in 1966 he was promoted to Professor.

McDonald became an active member in many professional organizations while teaching at the University of Toledo.  Since 1961 he was involved with the English Association of Ohio, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and the English Association of Northwestern Ohio.

McDonald was the Director of Freshman English and Chairman of the Freshman English Committee.  He also was the Associate Chairman of the English Department. In addition to these offices he held, McDonald was a member of the Graduate Studies Committee, the Undergraduate Studies Committee, the Library Special Collections Committee, and the Faculty Recruitment Committee.

In 1976, McDonald began publicizing, planning, and soliciting manuscripts for the Eudora Welty Newsletter, (EuWN).   As the editor of this bi-annual bibliographical journal, McDonald wrote the news sections and compiled “Works by Welty: A Continuing Checklist,” which appeared in each issue.  The first issue was published in January 1977.  McDonald served on the Coordinating Committee of the Eudora Welty Society.

In March 1985, McDonald retired from UT, returning as a Superannuate Professor.  At the end of the 1992-1993 academic year, McDonald took full retirement from the university.

Scope and Content Note

The William U. McDonald Collection contains two series.  These series consist of two series: Correspondence and Printed Materials.

The Correspondence Series contains correspondence to and from McDonald relating to the Eudora Welty Newsletter. (Box 1)  These letters contain information pertaining to responses from patrons requesting subscriptions, opinions regarding the newsletter-positive and negative reviews and bibliography notes and information to aid in the process of the newsletter.  Also included in box one are Pieces of News, The Welty Society Newsletter, various periodicals, and EuWN transition.

The rest of the collection is composed of the series Printed Materials, which are organized by the sub-series of newsletters. (Box 2-3)

The Eudora Welty Newsletter encompasses the final two boxes.  They were issued bi-annually and are arranged chronologically beginning the winter of 1977 through the summer of 1996.  Each issue contains textual variants of a Eudora Welty piece by various authors.  Also, is an article by W. U. McDonald, “Works by Welty: A Continuing Checklist”, along with many other articles by various authors pertaining to Eudora Welty’s works.

A special issue was published in April 1979 in honor of Miss Welty’s birthday.  It includes an unpublished prose sketch by Miss Welty, “Chodorov and Fields in Mississippi”, and contributions by three of her close friends. (Box 2)

In the summer of 1996, the fortieth issue of the Eudora Welty Newsletter was published with the announcement that W. U. McDonald was retiring after twenty years as editor. (Box 3)   Beginning with the Winter 1997 issue, EuWN will be edited by Pearl A. McHaney, who has compiled the Checklist of Welty Scholarship since 1986.  The newsletter will continue as a semi-annual publication that focuses on Welty bibliography and textual study and on news about Miss Welty as a literary figure.
