One of the most common questions we hear is, "What is student life like on campus?"
The easy answer to that question is to visit our campus to experience it for yourself! (Click here to schedule a campus visit). But here's our best attempt to describe it.
Most of the morning hours are filled with classes (or trying to wake up on time to get to your morning classes). Around 11 a.m. to noon, most of the dining halls and restaurants on campus will start to fill up. There are usually some programs or meetings (many with free pizza!) during this time. The busy places to hang out are in the Student Union and Carlson Library.
After 1 p.m., the afternoon is filled with more classes (including the first ones of the day for those of you who like to sleep in). If the weather's nice, you'll see students studying in Centennial Mall or tossing a football in the Flatlands. Some student organizations have meetings later in the afternoon, and most of the big, on-campus events and speakers will start around 7- 8 p.m.
Sleep in — you've earned it after the long week! Most students eat brunch/lunch in one of the dining halls and spend the afternoons studying or getting ready to head to a big event at UT (like Homecoming or Songfest) or to a football or basketball game on campus.
We've also got Westfield Franklin Park Mall within 15 minutes of campus, so some students visit there for shopping and dining. If it's in season, they might head to downtown Toledo to catch a Mud Hens baseball game or Toledo Walleye hockey game. Or maybe go to the Toledo Zoo or Toledo Museum of Art. There might be a good concert near campus or in downtown Toledo, too.
Big Annual Events
We already described the average day-to-day activities, but here are some of the major annual events that form a big part of student life:
•First Weeks UT — Get started at UT with movie screenings, free food and prizes, First Read book discussions and more.
•Music Fest — Held the first week of classes, this all-day concert features performers from every genre, including a big national act to close the evening.
•Homecoming — Take part in week-long activities and help crown a queen and king, enjoy free food, march in the parade and tailgate before the big game.
•Songfest — UT’s second-oldest tradition is “American Idol” meets “Dancing With the Stars,” and student organizations all compete!
•Dance Marathon — Head to the Rec Center and get moving and grooving 18 hours straight for charity.
•International Village/Food Festival — Sample food from around the world and learn about other students’ cultures.
UT has more than 200 student organizations for a variety of cultural, religious, social and academics interests, including Student Government and 19 fraternities and 13 sororities (some of which are housed on campus at McComas Village). UT is a division 1 school and member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Students get in free to all home games with their Rocket ID, and our motto is "See you at the game!" Whether it's football in the Glass Bowl, basketball or volleyball in Savage Arena, or baseball and softball at the Scott Park fields, you'll have a blast cheering on your fellow Rockets!
