Historical Sketch

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is “a grassroots, family oriented, support, education, and advocacy organization” whose primary goal is “to improve the lives of children, adolescents, and adults who have mental illness and to support their families.”  The organization is a national program based in Washington, D.C.  NAMI of Greater Toledo is just one branch of over 2500 members nationwide.
NAMI of Toledo began in 1982 as BOOST, Building on Our Strengths Together, when several family members of mentally ill individuals united together and created support groups.  These individuals were able to solicit funds from various groups and individuals via membership dues, donations, agency contracts, the Lucas County Mental Health Board, and the United Way of Greater Toledo.  In 1992 BOOST separated into two different groups: the Alliance for the Mentally Ill (AMI) and the Consumer’s Union.  Consumer is a term used to describe people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness.  These individuals wanted a larger role in their own affairs.  In 2002 the organization changed its name to NAMI.
Locally, NAMI has been responsible for instituting several programs to help the mentally ill.  These include a “24 hour access policy that insists on mental health centers being accessible, in having psychosocial rehabilitation programs established, and in forming an agency that is devoted to housing for people with mental illness,” as well as creating the Adult and Youth Task forces and the Crisis Intervention Team to the Toledo Police Department.  NAMI also supports events and educational programs including a candlelight vigil, the Hand-to-Hand education program, establishing teacher curriculum statewide, and working with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.  NAMI brings support and education to families and friends of the mentally ill as well as to the community.

Scope and Content Note

The Toledo Chapter, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill records consist of three linear feet and are arranged alphabetically then chronologically into four separate series: administrative records, financial records, education programs, and photographs.  These records stem from the organization’s founding in 1982 until 2002 and give a description of the group’s overall goals, methods, functions, and organization.  The records include board member minutes, board manuals, summary financial data, education class curricula, and photographs of individuals and events.
The first series is the administrative records, which includes allocations reports, articles of incorporation, regulations, board meetings, board manuals, and system overviews.  The administrative records are important for the everyday functions of the organization.
Series two comprises the financial records.  This series includes summary financial data such as yearly audit statements and budgets.
Series three is the educational programs material including Hand-to-Hand and Family-to-Family curricula materials.  A detailed list of the programs class schedule and materials are included.
The last series includes photographs of individuals, some identified and other not identified, and unidentified and identified events.
