Biographical Sketch
Joseph M. Jackson was born on September 25, 1917, in Kenova, West Virginia. In 1940 he got a job working at the Owns-Illinois Glass factory in Huntington, West Virginia, and soon became the plant photographer. About 1946 he was transferred to Owens-Illinois in Toledo as a photographer in the plant’s extensive Film Division. Later he became the manager of the Glass Container Division’s photographic department located in the Owens-Illinois Duraglas Center downtown. Jackson died in Toledo on September 3, 1957, due to a congenital heart condition. He was survived by his wife, Josephine; his daughter, Sara; his mother, Mrs. Harry McFann; and his sister, Mrs. Donald Watts.
Scope and Content Note
The Joseph M. Jackson Photograph Collection contains photographs taken by Jackson while employed by Owens-Illinois in Toledo and Huntington, West Virginia. Arranged alphabetically, the collection contains photographs of World War II, scenes from the Toledo area, the workings of the various Owen-Illinois factories, and visits to Toledo by celebrities such as Bob Hope and Joe E. Brown. Also included in the collection is Jackson’s birth certificate.
During the time period of 1940-1957, the Toledo Express Airport was being planned and built. Jackson took many photos of the area where it was to be built and the airplanes that were stationed there. In addition to the photographs, the collection includes copies of numerous newspaper clippings pertaining to the building of the airport.
Also included are color photographs of Toledo’s waterfront, ca. 1984. These photographs were not taken by Jackson, but can be used as a reference to note the change in Toledo’s downtown development.
