Historical/Biographical Sketch
James Granville Southworth was a professor of English at the University of Toledo from 1934 to 1966. He was born in the Toledo area in 1896 and remained close until his death in the 1990s. Some of his works include: Some Modern American Poets (1950), Verses of Cadence: An Introduction to the Prosody of Chaucer and his Followers (1954), The Poetry of Thomas Hardy (1947), and Sowing the Spring; Studies in British Poets form Hopkins to MacNiece (1968). In his memory, the University of Toledo offers the James G. Southworth Scholarship in the Humanities for any humanities major.
Scope and Content Note
Collection consists of Manuscripts and galley proofs of books written by James G. Southworth, professor of English at UT from 1934 to 1966. He taught courses such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton, and Intro to Poetry. Books are entitled “Sowing in the Spring”, “Vauxhall Gardens”, “Some Modern American Poets”, “More Modern American Poets”, and “The Prosody of Chaucer and His Followers”. There are also papers written by Southworth about poets T.S. Elliot, D.H. Lawrence, William Butler Yeats, and others. In addition, there is also a bound manuscript of his book “Aristotle and Mr. Shakespeare”.
